Frequently Asked Questions

A tour package to Tambopata National Reserve typically includes transfers to/from the airport or your hotel in Puerto Maldonado, river transportation by motorized boat, accommodation in an eco-lodge, full board, a bilingual naturalist guide, and ecotourism excursions: hikes through the Amazon rainforest, navigating the Madre de Dios River, wildlife viewing, visits to macaw clay licks, and, depending on availability, a trip to Lake Sandoval or a canopy tour. Rubber boots and safety equipment are often provided. Flights, alcoholic beverages, tips, personal expenses, travel insurance, and optional activities are not usually included. Some entrance fees or local taxes may be charged separately, depending on the tour operator.

For travel to Tambopata, the dry season (approximately May to October) offers less rain, more passable trails, and better conditions for hiking and wildlife photography. The rainy season (November to April) features a more lush rainforest, stronger rivers, and less dust, but with frequent downpours and more insects. The climate is tropical rainforest, with average temperatures of 22 to 32°C and high humidity. Early mornings can be cooler. Recommended for the tour: a lightweight raincoat, quick-drying clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, and flexibility in the itinerary, as wildlife viewing activities depend on the weather and river levels.

The gateway is Puerto Maldonado, with frequent flights from Lima or Cusco. The tour typically includes airport transfer to a river port and a motorized boat ride to the eco-lodge. The typical trip lasts 3 to 4 days (ideal for a long weekend), although 5-day programs are available for more in-depth macaw clay licks and interpretive trails. A typical itinerary combines day and night hikes, a visit to Lake Sandoval or a canopy tour, and a boat trip for wildlife viewing. It is recommended to arrive on a morning flight and return in the afternoon to make the most of your activities.

For this nature and adventure tour, pack lightweight long-sleeved clothing, quick-drying pants, extra socks, a poncho or raincoat, a hat, sunglasses, a headlamp, insect repellent (icaridin or DEET), sunscreen, a water bottle, a personal first-aid kit, binoculars, and a waterproof camera cover. Many operators provide rubber boots; large suitcases are usually left in storage in Puerto Maldonado, and you travel with a small bag. Eco-lodges offer private rooms with bathrooms, mosquito nets, and sometimes electricity on a schedule (generator or solar power); Wi-Fi, if available, is limited. Full board includes local cuisine; vegetarian or vegan diets can be arranged with prior notice.

Conditions may vary by season and operator, but a deposit is generally required to guarantee the reservation, with the balance due a few days before departure. Date changes are subject to availability and any fare differences. Cancellations made further in advance usually have better refund options; those made closer to the departure date may incur penalties or result in a no-show. We recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers cancellations due to medical reasons, weather conditions, or force majeure. To expedite the process, please have your passport or ID information ready, inform us of any allergies and dietary requirements, and confirm your flights at least 48 hours in advance.
