Machu Picchu, meaning “Old Mountain”, is situated 80 miles northeast of Cusco, nestled in the Peruvian Andes Mountain Range and bordered by the Vilcanota River. Constructed by the Inca Pachacutec between 1400 and 1500 A.D., it served as the exclusive residence for Inca nobility. Machu Picchu is in a subtropical zone with varied microclimates and sits at an elevation of 2,430 meters above sea level.
The guided tour provides a 2-hour exploration of this remarkable archaeological site, also recognized as The Lost City of the Incas. The area is rich in diverse flora and fauna, featuring various orchids and tree forests. Additionally, it is home to a variety of insects, mammals, and birds, including the “Gallito de las Rocas”, the national bird of Peru.
Take advantage of your free time in Machu Picchu to capture photos, or if you're feeling adventurous, climb Huayna Picchu mountain (optional) for a breathtaking view of the entire citadel. Huayna Picchu, meaning “Young Mountain,” stands at 2,700 meters above sea level. Although the climb is challenging, it could turn out to be the most memorable experience of your life.
As a designated World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu boasts stunning landscapes. It was a crucial agricultural hub for the Incas and the most significant urban center of the Incan Empire. The site is connected by several routes, known as Inca Trails, which facilitated trade throughout the Inca Empire. This location was the primary residence of Inca Pachacutec and his family. You also have the option to return to Machu Picchu town for lunch (optional).
After a full day in Machu Picchu, you should head back to the Aguas Calientes train station at the designated time to return to Cusco City. You'll first arrive at the Poroy train station and then take private transport back to your hotel.
