Frequently Asked Questions

An ecolodge experience in Tambopata typically includes transfers to/from Puerto Maldonado airport, accommodation in mosquito-lined cabins, full board, guided excursions with a bilingual naturalist guide, and entrance fees to the Tambopata National Reserve. Many tour packages provide basic equipment (rubber boots and ponchos), purified water, and assistance. Domestic flights, alcoholic beverages, premium snacks, tips, personal expenses, travel insurance, and taxes are usually not included. Typical eco-tour activities, depending on the itinerary, include jungle hikes, navigating the Madre de Dios River, wildlife viewing (macaws, monkeys, caimans, giant otters), visits to parrot clay licks, and, in some programs, canopy tours or visits to lagoons.

Tambopata is a year-round nature destination. The dry season (May–October) offers less rain, easier trails, and clear skies, ideal for photography and wildlife viewing. The rainy season (November–April) features more lush rainforest, stronger rivers, and fewer tourists, sometimes resulting in more competitive tour prices. Temperatures in the Peruvian Amazon range from 22–32°C (72–90°F), with high humidity. We recommend booking in advance during peak season and bringing waterproof gear at any time of year. Sightings of macaws, monkeys, and caimans are possible in both seasons; the choice depends on your travel style, budget, and tolerance for rain.

For the Tambopata rainforest tour, it's best to travel light with a backpack or soft-sided suitcase. Bring insect repellent (DEET 30–50% or icaridin 20%), sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, lightweight long-sleeved shirts and pants, a raincoat, hiking boots or shoes, a headlamp, a reusable water bottle, dry bags, a personal first-aid kit, and a camera. Consult a healthcare professional about vaccinations for the Peruvian Amazon (yellow fever, tetanus, hepatitis) and malaria prophylaxis, depending on your itinerary. Purchase travel insurance with medical coverage. Many ecolodges lend boots and ponchos, but it's advisable to confirm this with the tour operator and check baggage limits for domestic flights.

The most practical option is to fly to Puerto Maldonado (PEM) from Lima or Cusco. The tour operator typically picks you up at the airport and transfers you by road and boat along the Madre de Dios River to the ecolodge. The combined journey can take between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the location and water level. The recommended duration of the Tambopata package is 3 days/2 nights or 4 days/3 nights, with longer options available for photographers and birdwatchers. The physical exertion is moderate: jungle trails, early mornings, and humid weather. This trip is suitable for nature lovers and families; please inquire about policies for children.

An ecolodge excursion in Tambopata is safe if you follow the guide: life jacket on the boat, boots on hikes, and maintain a safe distance from wildlife. Many lodges practice responsible tourism: waste management, solar power or generators for short periods, and local employment. Connectivity is often limited: weak cell signal and no or restricted Wi-Fi; bring external batteries. Filtered water is usually available, and the kitchen can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets with prior notice. Bring cash for extra expenses. Review cancellation policies, weather-related rescheduling guarantees, and travel insurance coverage before confirming your reservation.
