Trekking In The Cagliero Glacier With Overnight

If you opt for the WITH TRANSFERS package, our journey will commence at 8 am as we begin picking you up from El Chalten hotels, heading towards Reserva Los Huemules. At 9:00 a.m., we will start our adventure from the Visitor Center. The excursion begins with a scenic 1.45-hour trek following the Diablo River upstream through a vibrant lenga forest along a well-maintained path, leading us to the picturesque Diablo Lagoon, situated at 770 meters above sea level. From this vantage point, you will enjoy views of the Cagliero Post, marking the start of the second phase of our excursion, venturing outside Los Huemules Reserve into private land (Campo Gorra Blanca). Distance: 7 km - Ascent gradient: 300 m

The excursion's second phase involves navigating the northern shore of Laguna del Diablo over easy yet uneven terrain, until reaching the Via Ferrata. This section features rock climbing areas of low difficulty, equipped with steel cables and artificial steps, allowing participants to move independently while secured with harnesses and specially designed tapes. Before embarking on this segment, our guides will equip participants with the necessary gear and provide instruction on its proper and safe use. As you gain confidence with the equipment, the journey becomes more exhilarating, with spectacular views of Diablo Lagoon and its namesake river valley enhancing as we ascend. It takes approximately an hour and a half to reach the Mirador del Glaciar, from which the untouched Cagliero Sur Glacier can be seen to the north at 950 meters above sea level. A brief walk from the viewpoint brings us to the Glacier’s front, where guides will fit crampons to the hikers' boots. Distance: 4 km - Elevation difference: 400 meters

The third phase of our program consists of trekking directly on the glacier. Weather permitting, we will enjoy lunch on the Glacier itself. Our average stay on the glacier is around 3 hours, during which participants can try their hand at ice climbing, depending on weather conditions and group fitness levels. In the afternoon, we will return to the Vivac Cagliero shelter to savor a hot drink while admiring the Glacier. Dinner will be served in the evening, followed by a restful night in our Vivac Dome, equipped with 6 beds.

On the following morning, after breakfast and before lunch, we will begin our return journey. We will trace our steps back along the same Via Ferrata to the Base Dome, then embark on the trail through the Green and Blue lagoons, uncovering new landscapes and the striking North face of Cerro Fitz Roy. The transfer back to El Chaltén is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with hotel drop-offs around 6:30 p.m.
