The “Loma del Diablo” offers a distinct and untamed trekking experience.
Due to its mid-mountain position, the path to La Loma del Diablo hill remains relatively unknown and seldom visited, providing a rare opportunity for direct engagement with the wilds of Patagonia. This route is accessible to hikers and skiers of all skill levels who are eager to traverse its snow-covered, glacier-free landscape.
The journey commences from the Laguna Cóndor Refuge, situated 17 km from El Chaltén. Here, the trek begins as we ascend via a serene trail that meanders through a dense lenga forest, culminating in a rocky terrain that guides us to the summit along the mountain ridge.
At an elevation of 1200 meters above sea level, we will be treated to breathtaking panoramic vistas that encompass the Pirque sector, Purgatorio Hill, Blanco Hill, and a view of the majestic Andes extending from La Paloma Hill to Castillo Hill.
Tour Description
The excursion kicks off at 08:00 am with a convenient pick-up from your hotel in the central area of El Chaltén. We depart from the town and drive 17 km to reach the Laguna Cóndor Refuge.
Upon arrival at the refuge, we embark on a trek through a stunning Lengas forest, guiding us upward as we gain elevation. After an hour, we exit the forest onto a vast rocky terrain, which also provides an ascent route to San Roque hill. We opt for the path to Loma del Diablo, following the ridge between the Maipo River and the Clarillo River. Without a defined path, we'll ascend along the entire mountain edge, an easy climb. Loma del Diablo is known for its broad faces and corridors of varying inclines, accommodating trekkers of all skill levels.
After two hours of hiking, we reach the summit at 1200 meters above sea level, where we pause to enjoy lunch and take in the breathtaking panoramic views. From the summit, to the northwest, lies Purgatorio Hill, to the west, Cerro Blanco, and we can also admire a vast expanse of the metropolitan Andes, stretching from Cerro la Paloma to Castillo hill.
Around 2 p.m., we begin our descent via the same route back to Refugio Laguna Cóndor. After approximately 7 hours and 20 km of trekking, we take a final break to enjoy a snack and a hot drink.
The adventure concludes with a drop-off at your hotel around 5:00 p.m.
