Tour Description

Day 1

Arrival in El Calafate

City of El Calafate

Upon landing at El Calafate airport or arriving at the bus terminal, you'll be greeted and transferred to your centrally located hotel.

The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure.

Day 2

Big Ice Trek on the Perito Moreno Glacier*

Los Glaciares National Park

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we will pick you up for a nearly 90-minute journey to Los Glaciares National Park.

Immediately after disembarking, you'll witness the grandeur of the Perito Moreno Glacier, but the true adventure begins at the "Bajo de las Sombras" port. Here, we'll board a boat to cross the Brazo Rico of Lake Argentino, reaching the western shore.

We'll traverse a section of the forest, and mountain guides will lead you closer to the glacier to equip your shoes with crampons, marking the start of your trek.

The trail follows the southern moraine of the Perito Moreno Glacier, and within just over an hour, you'll arrive at a breathtaking viewpoint, where we will step onto the ice.

Once on the glacier, you'll discover a world transformed: azure lagoons, deep crevices, immense sinkholes, enchanting caves, and the unparalleled feeling of being amid the glacier's heart.

You'll be guided by experts throughout the approximately three-and-a-half-hour exploration, delving into the unique features of this extraordinary glacier. The guides will also provide insights into the ice and its environment.

Enjoy a half-hour lunch break on the pristine ice, soaking in a scene of unparalleled beauty.

Returning to the moraine, you'll embark on another hour-long walk to reach the boat. The vessel will navigate close to the glacier's southern face before heading back to the port, concluding one of the most remarkable ice treks available.

The excursion includes a half-hour stroll along the walkways facing the glacier.

In the late afternoon, after nearly 12 hours of this amazing adventure, you'll be transported back to your hotel in El Calafate.

* The Big Ice excursion is available for those aged 18 to 50. If you are younger than 18 or older than 50, the service can be substituted with "Minitrekking on the Glacier," which includes a 90-minute glacier experience.

Day 3

Estancia Cristina Discovery

After breakfast at the hotel, you'll be transferred to Estancia Cristina for an unforgettable activity.

Your journey begins with a 4x4 ride through the rugged trails of the Feruglio Mountain Range's native forest, followed by a brief 20-minute walk to reach the exclusive viewpoint of the Upsala Glacier, featuring its confluence glaciers, Lake Guillermo, and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Here, you'll have the opportunity to observe every detail and reflect on the passage of time.

Next, savor a traditional lunch at El Quincho, followed by a guided tour of the Estancia Cristina Museum.

Once all activities conclude, you'll be transported back to your hotel.

Day 4

Leisure Day in the City

On this penultimate day, you can explore at your own pace, discovering quaint corners and attractions around your accommodation or embarking on another excursion of your choice.

Day 5

Farewell to El Calafate

In the morning, following breakfast, you'll check out from your hotel and have free time until your transport arrives to take you to the airport or terminal in El Calafate.

This is a full-day excursion, ideal for making the most of a trip to Argentine Patagonia. The usual schedule is 8:00 to 10:00 AM, with early pick-up from hotels in El Calafate, transfer to Los Glaciares National Park, a walk along the Perito Moreno Glacier walkways with free time for photography, and a short boat trip on Lake Argentino if included in the itinerary. The return to the city is in the afternoon. Times may vary due to Patagonian weather, traffic on access roads, and boat operations. Shared tours are available, and private tours are available upon request, subject to availability.

The tour is of low to moderate difficulty, suitable for most travelers. It involves walking along walkways and viewpoints with steps and uneven surfaces, so good hiking boots, layered clothing, and wind protection are recommended. The best time to visit El Calafate and take this excursion is from September to April (spring and summer), when the days are longer, sailings are more frequent, and visibility of the Perito Moreno Glacier is better. In winter (June to August), there are fewer services and lower temperatures, but fewer visitors. The Patagonian climate is variable: in summer, temperatures typically range from 5°C to 15°C with strong winds; in winter, temperatures can drop below freezing and there may be snow. Bring thermal and waterproof clothing, a hat, gloves, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Book in advance during peak season to secure your spot and the best departure times.
