Tour Description
Today, we embark on a memorable journey in the southernmost city. Our adventure begins as we check out of the hotel at the prearranged time.
Punta Arenas, situated near the southern tip of Chilean Patagonia, lies on the Strait of Magellan, which serves as a vital link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It's often the starting point for expeditions to the surrounding natural wonders and Antarctica.
Established in 1848 in this remote area, the city initially served as a penal colony before evolving into a key destination for European settlers and migrants from the Chiloé archipelago. Today, it boasts a population of around 100,000 inhabitants.
Throughout this delightful journey, we will explore notable landmarks and iconic sites within the city. Our first stop is Plaza Muñoz Gamero, the vibrant center of Punta Arenas since the late 19th century. It's a lively spot filled with various craft stalls offering local souvenirs. We will also visit the Monument to Hernando de Magallanes, the famed navigator who named the strait. Additionally, we will admire the Cathedral Church of Punta Arenas and other neo-Gothic structures erected by cattle ranching magnates.
If you wish, we can pause at one of the city's museums or cultural centers, such as the Museo Salesiano Maggiorino Bergatello, showcasing an impressive collection of historical and cultural artifacts, or the Nao Victoria, a full-scale model of Hernando de Magellan's ship, the first vessel to circumnavigate the globe. This unique Magellan attraction allows you to relive the onboard experience through ambient sounds, replicas of daily items, navigational tools, and artillery, taking you back 500 years in time. (Museum entry is not included in the standard tour.)
To conclude our city tour, we will visit the Cerro de la Cruz, offering breathtaking panoramic vistas of the city, the Strait of Magellan, and Tierra del Fuego Island. This spot is perfect for capturing photographs and relishing the region's natural beauty.
During the tour, we will delve into the rich history of Punta Arenas, its ties to Antarctic exploration, and the colonization of the area.
Before heading back to the hotel, the excursion offers a chance to explore the northern part of the city, featuring monuments dedicated to the shepherd, the Croatian immigrant, and the oil industry.
