This location was once the southernmost settlement within the Inca Empire. Here, you can visit the central square where important ceremonies took place, discover their residential and communal areas, and experience the famous “stairs to heaven.”
The journey to the ruins features breathtaking panoramic views, including Cerro Negro, the Colorado River, and a passage through the city of London.
Throughout the tour, you will gain fascinating insights into the history of these indigenous peoples, all while enjoying spectacular landscapes on the way to the ruins.
Tour Description
The experience begins with a pickup directly from your accommodation.
The journey to the Shincal Ruins of Quimivil takes us through breathtaking scenery. For instance, we will travel alongside the Colorado River, which offers stunning landscapes throughout the route.
Our tour also includes a visit to Cerro Negro, a prominent mountain in Catamarca, Argentina. Standing at approximately 5,700 meters above sea level, it ranks among the region's highest peaks. Its name, meaning "Black Hill," comes from the dark volcanic rocks and stones that give it a unique appearance.
As we approach our main destination, we will pass through London, known as the second oldest city in Argentina, established in 1588 after Santiago del Estero. At this stage, we are traveling along National Route 40 and at the base of the Shincal mountain range, close to the Quimivil River.
Now entering the Belén department, we will follow the gorge of the Quimivil River along Route 40 to reach this significant archaeological site in Catamarca’s history: the Shincal Ruins of Quimivil. This remarkable site was once the southernmost city of the Inca Empire.
After our visit, we will retrace our route for approximately 140 km, returning to our accommodation in Tinogasta.
