We invite you to explore the wonders of Templar Patagonia: Legend has it that the Templar Fleet transported the Holy Grail to South America from England, and "El Fuerte" was the first destination they reached, a vast coastal plateau visible to the south of Las Grutas.
Our adventure begins with a journey in a legendary convoy of 4x4 military trucks, visiting the Villa de los Pulperos. You will have the chance to enjoy sandboarding on the dunes of Piedras Coloradas beach and savor a spectacular Patagonian barbecue by the sea.
For dessert, we delve into "The Basement" to understand the formation of tides, and at the Argentino Fort, we will snorkel in the Laguna de Loma Blanca. We will conclude the afternoon by listening to the fascinating legend of the Templars after refreshing in the sea.
Tour Description
Our journey begins from Las Grutas at the designated meeting point at 10:00 am, with just 50 km separating us from the Argentine Fort.
Our first destination is Villa de los Pulperos, where we'll leave our 4x4 vehicles to explore this beach and discover the ancient techniques used by locals who specialize in harvesting the world's smallest octopuses. Villa de los Pulperos marks the start of what is known as “El Camino de los Pulperos,” a gravel path that has been traversed for over 75 years and is lined with canyons rich in marine fossils.
We will proceed south along the route to reach the Piedras Coloradas beach, a haven for artisanal fishing boats and birdwatchers, named for the granite stones found there. This beach is encircled by a chain of dunes inviting us to engage in sandboarding, with boards and sleds provided by our guides for us to glide freely across the sand.
Following our dune adventures, the path presents more challenges with the tricky sands of "El Buque," where our 4x4s will navigate through to bring us to the campsite set up by our guides, where we will enjoy a genuine Patagonian barbecue by the sea.
Post-lunch, we continue approximately 15 kilometers to reach "El Sótano," a coastal region known for having the largest tidal range in Argentina. Here, the beach can extend 1,200 meters and, in under six hours, the tide can obstruct our convoy's path. We will take a moment to observe how and why these tides occur.
The final 20 km of our route lead us to Fuerte Argentino, where we may encounter guanacos, foxes, hares, tortoises, and vultures soaring above. When the expansive plateau appears before us, we'll leave our 4x4s to admire its grandeur. This stop will be extended, allowing us to enjoy the Laguna de Loma Blanca, which forms at high tide. Here, we can cool off and snorkel freely in waters teeming with marine life, such as silversides, octopuses, crabs, and mullets.
To conclude the day, we'll share the sunset with mates and conversations, learning about the history of Templar Patagonia and the origins of the Fuerte Argentino and its first settlers.
We'll commence our return journey around 6:00 p.m. along the same road back to Las Grutas, concluding with drop-off at the meeting point.
