Once we pick you up from your hotel, we'll embark on a bus journey to the city center, where an expert guide will unravel the rich history of Salta. Established in the 16th century by the Spanish visionary Hernando de Lerma, Salta blossomed into a thriving commercial hub. As we navigate through the city, you'll witness the remnants of Salta's golden era in its cathedrals and gilded mansions. Today, Salta is celebrated for its stunning and meticulously preserved colonial architecture.
Upon reaching the central plaza, you'll be captivated by the majestic, twin-towered Salta Cathedral, erected in 1885. Here, you'll learn about the national hero General Güemes, whose remains are enshrined within the cathedral. Güemes was a key figure in the fight against the Spanish during Argentina's War of Independence.
As we pass by the Cultural Center of the Americas, you'll have the chance to explore the Spanish colonial architecture of the viceroyalty at the Museo Histórico del Norte, which is housed in the former cabildo, or city hall.
Marvel at the picture-perfect San Francisco Church, with its towering white columns supporting a vibrant crimson facade. Standing at 174 feet (53 meters), its purple bell tower houses a bell crafted from cannons used in the Battle of Salta.
