Descripción del Tour:
In the early hours of the morning, precisely at 3:30 a.m., we will collect you from your hotel in the city of Cusco. Our shared transport will embark on a 3.5-hour journey through a land of untamed desert vistas, towering snowcapped peaks, and herds of alpacas.
Upon reaching the trailhead for our hike, we will enjoy a hot breakfast before beginning our trek from Chillihuani, situated at an altitude of 4,200 meters above sea level (13,900 ft). From this point, a 4-hour uphill hike awaits us as we make our way to the renowned Rainbow Mountain in Peru.
Throughout the journey, you'll be captivated by the stunning landscapes of the Andes, with their glacial peaks, red valleys, rocky hills, and the traditional sight of llamas and alpacas grazing. Upon reaching the summit of the mountain, we will have the chance to observe some Andean wildlife. Vicuñas, often referred to as the Andean camel, are unique to this region of Cusco and belong to the same family as llamas and alpacas. They are smaller in size but renowned for having the world's most expensive wool.
Once we arrive at the top to witness the Rainbow Mountain, we'll have ample time to capture photos and relax, even at these high altitudes, soaking in the majestic views. We will also have a clear view of the Ausangate Mountain, the tallest peak in Cusco (just under 21,000 ft), which is part of the Vilcanota Range.
As we explore this incredible location, our tour guide will provide fascinating insights into the formation of these breathtaking mountains, which took place millions of years ago, and explain how they acquired their vibrant colors.
After capturing a few more stunning images and absorbing the scenery (perhaps even spotting a few condors in the vicinity), we will begin our descent with a 2-hour downhill hike. We will then rendezvous with our transport, which will take us to a local restaurant where we’ll savor a delicious hot lunch.
Finally, we'll return to Cusco, arriving around 5:00 p.m., where we will drop you off at your hotel.

The best time to visit Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain in Peru is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. During these months, the weather is more stable, meaning clear skies and a lower chance of rain. This offers ideal conditions for enjoying the mountain's stunning panoramic views. Hiking trails are also more accessible and safer. However, it's important to bring appropriate clothing for the cold, as temperatures can be low, especially in the early morning hours.
The Rainbow Mountain excursion typically lasts a full day. The tour usually begins very early in the morning, around 3 or 4 a.m., and runs until late afternoon, approximately 7 p.m. This includes transportation to and from Cusco, the time spent trekking up the mountain, and the return trip. Depending on the travelers' pace and physical condition, the hike is usually about 3 to 4 hours round trip. A good level of physical fitness is recommended.
Rainbow Mountain is located at a high altitude, reaching approximately 5,200 meters above sea level. Proper preparation is essential to avoid the effects of altitude sickness, which can include dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. It is recommended to acclimatize in Cusco for at least two days before the hike. Drinking plenty of water, eating light, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco are helpful measures. It is also recommended to carry coca leaves or coca candies, which help mitigate the symptoms of altitude sickness. Consult a doctor.
The Rainbow Mountain trek is considered moderate to high difficulty. The hike is approximately 10 kilometers round trip, with steep slopes and uneven terrain in some sections. The main difficulty lies in the altitude, which can make breathing difficult and increase the physical effort required. Participants are recommended to be in good physical condition and have previous trekking experience. If necessary, a horse can be rented on-site to facilitate the ascent.
For the Rainbow Mountain hike, it's important to wear appropriate clothing, including layers to adapt to the changing temperatures. A waterproof and windproof jacket is essential, as well as thermal clothing for cold mornings. Comfortable and sturdy footwear, preferably hiking boots, is crucial for trekking over uneven terrain. Don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun at high altitudes. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a light backpack for the day. Have personal documents and a first aid kit with medication for altitude sickness on hand.
