Frequently Asked Questions

This trek in the Colca Valley (Arequipa, Peru) is typically offered as a 2-day/1-night or 3-day/2-night program. You'll hike between 4 and 7 hours per day, with steep ascents and descents (accumulated elevation gain of approximately 1,000 meters per day). The altitude ranges from 2,200 to 3,600 meters above sea level, making acclimatization essential. The trek is moderate to challenging, ideal for travelers in good physical condition with basic hiking experience. The tour usually begins very early in the morning from Arequipa, visits Andean viewpoints (such as the condor area) and local villages, and concludes with a return trip to Arequipa, depending on the chosen itinerary.

The tour package typically includes round-trip tourist transfers (Arequipa–Colca), a bilingual (Spanish/English) local guide, basic accommodation in a lodge or oasis, and meals as per the itinerary (e.g., dinner and breakfast en route). Hotel pickup and logistical support during the trek are often provided. The following are usually not included: the Colca Canyon Tourist Ticket/entrance fee, drinks, snacks, tips, personal trekking equipment, and travel insurance. Optional services (such as accommodation upgrades, private tours, or additional transportation) may incur extra costs. We recommend reviewing the "includes/not included" details before booking to avoid surprises and optimize your travel budget.

For an adventure trip to the Colca Valley, bring trekking boots with good traction, trekking poles, layered clothing (thermal base layer, fleece, and windproof/waterproof jacket), a hat, gloves, UV sunglasses, and high-factor sunscreen. Add 2–3 liters of water (or water purification tablets), energy snacks, a headlamp, a personal first-aid kit, and cash in soles. We recommend acclimatizing for 1–2 days in Arequipa before the trek to minimize altitude sickness. Maintain a steady pace, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol. If you have heart problems, knee issues, or vertigo, consult your doctor and the tour operator. Purchase travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking activities.

The best time for hiking in the Colca Canyon/Valley is the dry season (approximately April to November): clear skies, more stable trails, and excellent panoramic views. During the rainy season (December to March), there can be mud and slippery sections, although the landscape is lush and green. Daytime temperatures typically range from 15–25°C (59–77°F), and at night they can drop to 0–5°C (32–41°F) at higher altitudes. Solar radiation is intense year-round: wear a hat and sunscreen. For Andean condor sightings, the early morning hours at viewpoints like Cruz del Cóndor are ideal. During peak season (June–August), book in advance.

The tour is safe when conducted with an authorized operator, certified guide, and appropriate equipment. Guides provide safety briefings, pace the hike, and monitor altitude; tour vehicles typically carry a first-aid kit. We recommend good physical condition, prior acclimatization, and travel insurance. The excursion is generally suitable for those 12 years and older who are accustomed to hiking; please inquire about conditions for children and seniors. Please inform us of any allergies or dietary restrictions in advance. Booking and cancellation policies vary by season and availability: check penalties, deadlines, and refunds before paying. Book early during peak periods to secure availability, the best rate, and reliable logistics.
