Tour Description

DAY 1

We will collect you from your hotel in the heart of Arequipa city. From there, our transportation will follow the Cabrerías route to the starting point of our ascent to the Misti Volcano, situated at an elevation of 4,100 meters above sea level.

Take in the stunning landscapes of the Arequipa valley, encircled by majestic mountains and volcanoes. Our journey up the Misti Volcano will commence with a 6-hour trek. Along this path, you'll have the chance to observe the local flora and fauna, including cacti and a variety of bird species. During the hike, we will also enjoy a box lunch.

Misti Volcano is positioned 20 kilometers northeast of Arequipa city, bordering the Chili River, and soars to 5,820 meters above sea level. Its name, derived from the Quechua language, translates to "white-skinned man." Classified as an active volcano, it lies within the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve.

We will arrive at the Base Camp, which is located at 4,800 meters above sea level. Here, we will establish our camp and enjoy a rejuvenating dinner.

DAY 2

We will set off early today, and following breakfast, we will embark on a 6-hour hike as we continue our ascent. Our goal is to reach the summit by midday, offering us breathtaking views of the volcano's crater.

From here, you can admire the awe-inspiring vistas of the Andes mountain range, as well as the Chachani and Pichu Pichu volcanoes, both of which are visible from the city of Arequipa. There will be ample time for photos.

This volcano has undergone more than 10 eruptions in recent history, with the most recent occurring in the 15th century during the Inca era.

Following our summit experience, we will begin our descent back to Base Camp. After a brief rest, we will continue hiking for an additional 2 hours until we reach our transport, which will convey us back to Arequipa city.

Upon our arrival in the city, we will escort you back to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ascent of Misti volcano (5,822 m) is a moderate-to-challenging high-altitude trek. While not technical climbing, the sustained incline, sandy terrain, and altitude require good physical condition and the stamina to hike for 6–10 hours per day. Acclimatizing for 2–3 nights in Arequipa or the Colca Valley before the tour is recommended. It is not suitable for people with heart or respiratory problems, or recent injuries. The minimum age is usually 14–16 years old when accompanied by an adult. Staying hydrated, eating well, and maintaining a steady pace are crucial to prevent altitude sickness (soroche). Having a certified guide enhances safety and the overall experience.

The Misti tour typically includes: round-trip transportation from Arequipa to the trailhead, a certified mountain guide, a briefing, permits/entrance fees, camping equipment (tent, sleeping mat, cooking equipment), meals along the trail (dinner and breakfast; sometimes a boxed lunch), and logistical support throughout the excursion. Depending on the provider, trekking poles and water may also be included. Generally, the tour does NOT include: travel insurance, accommodation in Arequipa, a sleeping bag, additional drinks, snacks, tips, personal equipment rental, or unforeseen expenses. It is possible to rent missing equipment. Always check the tour package details, cancellation policies, and group size for a safe experience.

The typical itinerary for climbing Misti volcano is 2 days/1 night. Day 1: Early departure from Arequipa, transfer to the starting point, and a 3–5 hour ascent to base camp (approx. 4,500–4,700 m). Dinner, summit briefing, and rest. Day 2: Early morning summit push (5–7 hours) to enjoy the sunrise with views of Chachani, Pichu Pichu, and Arequipa. 3–4 hour descent to the vehicle and return to the city in the afternoon. A 1-day express option is available for highly trained climbers. The schedule may vary depending on weather, group acclimatization, and local regulations; tour safety is always the priority.

For this adventure trekking excursion in Peru, bring: hiking boots with good grip, gaiters (for sand/gravel), thermal socks, technical pants, thermal base layer, fleece, waterproof and windproof jacket, hat, buff, and gloves. Add UV 3–4 sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm. A 30–40 L backpack, 2–3 L of water (or water purification tablets), energy snacks, and a thermos are also recommended. Bring a sleeping bag rated to -5 to -10 °C and a headlamp with batteries. Trekking poles are helpful for the descent. Also bring a personal first-aid kit (painkillers, anti-inflammatories, altitude sickness medication if prescribed by your doctor), ID, cash for entrance fees/tips, and a dust bag for your gear.

The best time to climb Misti Volcano is during the dry season, from April/May to November, when the weather in Arequipa is more stable, with clear skies and a lower probability of rain or thunderstorms. Nights at camp are usually cold (below 0°C) and the wind can pick up near the summit. During the rainy season (December–March), there may be snow/ice and reduced visibility; fewer trips are scheduled. Always check the forecast and the condition of the route. Setting off at dawn maximizes safety and the views. Wear layers of clothing and protect yourself from the intense high-altitude sun.
