Ahu Akivi: Secrets And Legends Of The Seven Moai

We will begin this experience at the meeting point at 3:00 p.m., heading first to Ahu Akivi, one of the few ceremonial platforms where the moai appear to face the sea.

Ahu Akivi is a ceremonial complex made up of platforms guarded by seven moai facing the ocean. It is also one of the few ahu where the moai have restored eyes.

Together with our expert local guide, we will learn how these impressive statues were carved, transported, and erected, as well as their significance to ancient Rapa Nui society. We will also hear about the mysterious collapse of the Rapa Nui civilization and how it influenced the island’s present-day culture.

We will further discover the myths behind the creation of the moai and how these legends are deeply intertwined with the island’s worldview and beliefs.

In addition to Ahu Akivi, we will visit Puna Pau, a small crater of red volcanic stone where the pukao were crafted—cylindrical stone topknots that can be seen on several moai across the island, resembling hats.

Finally, we will continue to the Ana Te Pahu caves, a complex of caves and galleries located on the slopes of the inactive Maunga Terevaka volcano, where we can find remnants of ancient inhabitants.

After exploring the area and enjoying an afternoon full of history and culture, we will return to the meeting point at approximately 5:30 p.m.
