Tour Description

The adventure kicks off with a pick-up from centrally located hotels in El Calafate. As we head to Los Glaciares National Park, our bilingual guide shares insights about the region's unique flora, fauna, and rich history.

The journey takes us along the historic Route 15, also known as the "Estancias Road", where you'll witness stunning Patagonian vistas and hear tales of native communities, pioneers, and early settlers.

Our first stop is at the renowned Estancia Nibepo Aike, where a visit to the historic shearing shed, now a museum, awaits. Here, indulge in a traditional Patagonian lamb barbecue in the estancia's barbecue area, complemented by a salad bar, dessert, and drinks. A vegetarian option is available upon request.

After savoring lunch, we proceed to the South Glacier Pier to embark on a cruise through the South Arm and Rico Arm of Lake Argentino.

During the cruise, you'll disembark at Playa de las Monedas, a location only accessible by boat. From here, enjoy a leisurely 40-minute walk through the native forest leading to the Mirador de las Rocas viewpoint, offering breathtaking views of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Those who choose not to hike can stay on board and reach the viewpoint by boat.

Once back on the vessel, you will cruise past the majestic southern face of the Perito Moreno Glacier, with opportunities to witness ice calving and observe the glacier's advance towards the Magellan Peninsula, a globally renowned phenomenon for its dramatic ruptures.

The journey concludes as the boat docks at Puerto Bajo de las Sombras, where you'll access the Perito Moreno Glacier walkways. These walkways provide diverse angles to admire one of Argentine Patagonia's most iconic landscapes.

After more than an hour exploring the panoramic balconies, we begin our return to El Calafate as the sun sets.

Frequently Asked Questions

The excursion typically includes transfers to/from your hotel in El Calafate, a Spanish-speaking guide specializing in nature tourism, a visit to one or more Patagonian ranches with rural activities (history, easy walks, country life), and a typical Patagonian lunch (often an asado or regional menu with non-alcoholic beverages). Afterward, a scenic boat trip takes you past a glacier in Los Glaciares National Park to admire the ice walls and photograph the landscape. Park entrance fees, tips, and alcoholic beverages are generally not included. Please check the final details of services, menu, and duration at the time of booking.

This is a full-day excursion (approximately 8–10 hours), ideal for travelers who want to combine rural tourism with a sailing experience. The typical itinerary begins with pick-up from hotels in El Calafate, followed by a transfer across the Patagonian steppe to a estancia (ranch), where you'll be welcomed and given an interpretive tour, followed by a regional lunch. In the afternoon, you'll continue to the port to board the boat and sail in front of the glacier, with time for photos and iceberg viewing, depending on conditions. Finally, you'll return to the city. Schedules may vary depending on the season, weather, and the operator's logistics. We recommend confirming the itinerary the day before the tour.

The Patagonian weather is changeable, with wind and possible rain in any season. To enjoy the excursion, bring layers of thermal clothing, a waterproof/windproof jacket, a hat, gloves, a buff, comfortable pants, and hiking boots or shoes with good traction. Also pack sunscreen, UV sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, and a power bank for glacier photos. It's helpful to have cash or a card for entrance fees to Los Glaciares National Park, snacks, or souvenirs at the estancia. In summer, mornings can be cool; in winter, very cold and icy. Check the forecast the day before and follow the guide's safety recommendations during the boat trip.

The Estancia Route excursion with lunch and glacier navigation is of low to moderate difficulty: it includes transfers, boarding/disembarking, and short walks on uneven terrain. It is generally suitable for families with children and seniors in good general health. Wheelchair or stroller accessibility depends on the dock, walkways, and boat; please communicate any special needs when booking to coordinate assistance. Infants and children may have different policies and rates. Pregnant women and people with heart or balance problems should consult their doctor and the tour operator. Wear stable shoes, appropriate clothing, and follow the guide's instructions for a safe experience.

The best time for this Patagonian experience is usually from September to April, with longer days and more sailing options. In winter, there are fewer departures, but spectacular snowy landscapes are possible if the weather permits. Due to high demand, book online in advance to secure your spot and time slot; you will receive a confirmation and electronic voucher. Check if full payment or a deposit is required. Change and cancellation policies generally allow modifications with 48–72 hours' notice, although these may vary depending on the season and operator. Verify if entrance fees to Los Glaciares National Park are paid separately. We recommend travel insurance and reconfirming your pick-up the day before.
