Frequently Asked Questions

A kayaking excursion on Lake Argentino typically takes half a day, with between two and four hours of actual time on the water, depending on conditions and the itinerary. It begins with a safety briefing, equipment fitting, and basic practice, followed by a guided paddle through the lake's bays and channels, offering views of icebergs and the Andes Mountains. The tour operator sets morning or afternoon departure times to take advantage of the Patagonian weather. The meeting point is usually in El Calafate or at a nearby dock, with optional transfers available. The itinerary may vary due to wind or lake conditions, always prioritizing safety and a quality experience.

This is a moderate adventure activity, suitable for beginners in good general fitness. No prior kayaking experience is required, but you must know how to swim and be comfortable in aquatic environments. Minimum age and specific requirements (such as weight or height) depend on the tour operator; it is recommended to inquire when booking. People with recent injuries, pregnant women, or those with heart conditions must obtain medical clearance. Patagonian winds can increase the challenge, so the group and weather conditions are assessed before departure. Certified guides adjust the pace, distance, and maneuvers to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in Argentine Patagonia.

The tour typically includes a single or double kayak, paddle, life jacket, certified safety equipment, technical instruction, and a bilingual guide specializing in the El Calafate region. Some programs also include snacks/hydration and hotel transfers (depending on the price). You should bring layered thermal clothing (non-cotton), a waterproof/windproof jacket, closed-toe shoes that can get wet, a hat, thin gloves, sunglasses with a secure fit, sunscreen, reusable water bottles, and a quick-drying towel. A waterproof case for your phone/camera is recommended. On cold days, add a buff and thermal socks. Check with the operator if they provide wetsuits or neoprene suits. Travelers who wear contact lenses should consider bringing prescription glasses or extra protection.

The weather in Patagonia is changeable: Patagonian winds, low temperatures, and possible precipitation can affect navigation. The operator monitors the weather forecast and may reschedule or cancel for safety reasons. Protocols are in place, including a risk briefing, mandatory use of life jackets, and supervision by certified guides. If conditions worsen, the tour will be shortened or adjusted. Cancellation and rescheduling policies vary; many offer free changes with prior notice or cancellations due to bad weather without penalty, but it is crucial to review the terms when booking. Travel insurance and itinerary flexibility are recommended. The safety of the traveler and the preservation of the environment are always the top priorities.

Bookings can be made online with immediate confirmation or through the tour operator's sales team in El Calafate. Prices vary depending on the season, service type (regular or private), whether transfers are included, and group size. During peak season (October to April), there is greater availability and more favorable weather; it's advisable to book in advance. In winter, the experience is colder and subject to weather conditions. Credit card payments and electronic vouchers are generally accepted. For an optimal experience, morning tours tend to have less wind. Check current discounts, age requirements, and cancellation policies before confirming your adventure tour.
