Tour To Sillustani Pre Inca Tombs

We will pick you up from your hotel in Puno to embark on a journey to the archaeological site of Sillustani. This fascinating complex is perched atop a peninsula on the banks of Lake Umayo, located 22.3 miles from both Puno and Lake Titicaca.

The site features approximately 90 funerary towers constructed by the Kolla culture, an Aymara community that thrived before the rise of the Inca Empire. Numerous mummies have been discovered within these structures, including those of significant figures such as priests, leaders, and nobles. These individuals were mummified and positioned in a fetal pose, accompanied by their possessions like gold, silver, and ceramics.

The preservation of these burial towers is remarkable, showcasing expertly crafted stones of varying shapes that fit together seamlessly. The architecture and engineering of the Kolla culture were remarkably advanced for their era. Some towers reach heights of 12 meters, with the Lagarto Chullpa standing as the tallest and most iconic.

The Sillustani tour also includes a visit to a local family who raises Alpacas. They will demonstrate their traditional methods of food preparation, their way of life, weaving techniques, and how they preserve ancestral customs.
