Tour Description

We will pick you up from your hotel in Puno to embark on a journey to the archaeological site of Sillustani. This fascinating complex is perched atop a peninsula on the banks of Lake Umayo, located 22.3 miles from both Puno and Lake Titicaca.

The site features approximately 90 funerary towers constructed by the Kolla culture, an Aymara community that thrived before the rise of the Inca Empire. Numerous mummies have been discovered within these structures, including those of significant figures such as priests, leaders, and nobles. These individuals were mummified and positioned in a fetal pose, accompanied by their possessions like gold, silver, and ceramics.

The preservation of these burial towers is remarkable, showcasing expertly crafted stones of varying shapes that fit together seamlessly. The architecture and engineering of the Kolla culture were remarkably advanced for their era. Some towers reach heights of 12 meters, with the Lagarto Chullpa standing as the tallest and most iconic.

The Sillustani tour also includes a visit to a local family who raises Alpacas. They will demonstrate their traditional methods of food preparation, their way of life, weaving techniques, and how they preserve ancestral customs.

At the conclusion of the visit, you will be returned to your hotel, or you can opt for a tour that includes a transfer to Juliaca airport (optional).

The Sillustani Tombs excursion typically lasts 3 to 4 hours. The usual itinerary includes a transfer from your hotel in Puno to the Sillustani archaeological complex, where you'll enjoy a guided tour of the famous chullpas (funerary towers), an exploration of the pre-Incan culture, and views of Lake Umayo. The tour includes time for taking photos and enjoying the scenery, as well as the return to your starting point or your accommodation in Puno at the end of the tour.

The price of a tour to the Sillustani Tombs typically includes transfers in tourist transport from Puno, a bilingual professional guide, and entrance to the Sillustani archaeological site. However, it's important to confirm with the agency whether entrance tickets are included or paid separately. Meals and personal expenses are generally not included. Before booking, verify exactly which services are included in the tour and ask about any potential extra charges to avoid surprises during your trip to Peru.

The best time to visit the Sillustani Tombs is during the dry season, between May and September, as the weather in Puno is sunnier and more stable. However, at an altitude of over 3,800 meters, temperatures can be cool, especially in the mornings and evenings. Warm clothing, sunscreen, and water are recommended. During the rainy season (November to March), access can be more difficult due to intermittent rain, but the landscape is lush and green.

While hiring a guide isn't strictly necessary to visit the Sillustani Tombs, it significantly enhances the tourist experience. A professional guide provides historical context, detailed explanations of the Colla and Inca cultures, funerary architecture, and engaging stories that enrich the visit. Furthermore, having a guide simplifies travel logistics, facilitates understanding of local customs, and ensures a safe and well-organized excursion, allowing tourists to make the most of their time in Sillustani.

Sillustani is located at over 3,800 meters above sea level, so it's common to experience altitude sickness symptoms such as headaches or fatigue. Travelers are advised to arrive in Puno one or two days prior to the trip to acclimatize, drink plenty of water, and avoid heavy meals and alcoholic beverages. Carrying coca leaves and warm clothing can help you cope with the climate and altitude. If you have cardiovascular or respiratory problems, consult your doctor before embarking on this excursion.
