If you're planning a trip to Argentina, don't miss the opportunity to embark on the classic 4-day adventure through San Juan and La Rioja. This package offers a chance to explore unique destinations that are off the beaten path, each with extraordinary formations and characteristics that will leave you in awe.
These sites are so remarkable that UNESCO declared the areas encompassing Talampaya National Park and Ischigualasto Provincial Park as a World Heritage Site in 2000, under the name Ischigualasto/Talampaya Natural Parks, recognizing the rich archaeological and paleontological significance they hold.
During this journey, you'll have the chance to visit both parks and explore them in comfort, guided by professional experts.
The Ischigualasto Provincial Park stands out globally for its Triassic continental sediments, including ash and rocks in shades of white, gray, red, and vermilion, which contain fossils of reptiles and dinosaurs. Spanning 2,916 hectares, it is situated in the northern part of San Juan province. Its fascinating geological formations, such as The Submarine, The Mushroom, and The Bocce Court, along with the remnants of the earliest dinosaurs, make this site particularly captivating. It's often referred to as the "Valley of the Moon" due to its lunar-like landscape. Meanwhile, Talampaya National Park extends over approximately 215,000 hectares in the southern region of La Rioja province. This area holds remnants of life from millions of years ago, where the vivid reddish and brown tones of the landscape transport visitors back to an era dominated by dinosaurs and other extinct species. The Talampaya Canyon, with its towering 150-meter-high red walls, diverse formations like El Monje and La Torre, and remarkable petroglyphs, is the park's most significant and awe-inspiring attraction. Alongside these exceptional excursions, the package includes 3 nights of accommodation and transfers from San Juan Airport.

A typical tour package in Argentina includes ground transportation between San Juan, La Rioja, and the national parks, a bilingual (Spanish/English) tour guide, accommodation with breakfast in a tourist-class hotel or higher, and guided tours of Talampaya National Park and Ischigualasto Provincial Park (Valley of the Moon), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Depending on the package price, park entrance fees and internal tours in authorized vehicles may be included or paid for locally. Generally, flights, lunches and dinners, drinks, tips, and personal expenses are not included. Always check the updated inclusions and the fine print before booking.

The tour typically lasts 3 to 4 days, ideal for combining nature and culture in the Cuyo region of Argentina. Typical itinerary: Day 1: Arrival in San Juan or La Rioja, transfer to the hotel, and optional city tour; Day 2: Excursion to the Valley of the Moon (Ischigualasto) in a guided caravan along scenic routes; Day 3: Visit to Talampaya Canyon and its geological formations in authorized park vehicles; Day 4: Return or optional activities (wineries, Route 40, dams). Schedules depend on park opening times and availability. Transfers are provided in a minivan/4x4 with insurance and a specialized guide.

The best time for this nature excursion is autumn and spring (March–May and September–November), when the weather is mild and the skies are usually clear for photographing desert landscapes. In summer, temperatures can exceed 35–40°C; in winter, mornings are cold and there is a significant temperature range, with occasional winds (Zonda). Talampaya and Ischigualasto National Parks are open year-round, but some tours may be adjusted due to weather conditions. We recommend booking early morning or late afternoon tours for better light and cooler temperatures. During peak season (holidays and school breaks), demand is high; secure your spot in advance.

The tour is of low to moderate difficulty: it includes short walks over uneven terrain, stairs, and sun exposure. It is accessible to most travelers with normal mobility, provided they follow the tour guide and park regulations. What to bring: hiking boots or shoes with good traction, a hat or cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, lightweight quick-drying clothing and a jacket for the evening/night, a reusable water bottle with at least 1.5 liters of water, snacks, a camera, and cash for entrance fees/souvenirs. Removing rocks or fossils is prohibited; drones require prior authorization according to current regulations.

You can book securely online; a deposit is required to confirm your reservation, and you will receive a voucher with all the details of the Talampaya and Valley of the Moon tour. The final price varies depending on the season, hotel category, room occupancy, and whether park entrance fees and internal trails are included. Change and cancellation policies usually allow modifications free of charge up to a certain deadline; outside of that period, penalties and no-show fees apply. We recommend purchasing travel insurance. When booking, please indicate your nationality and ID/passport number, as some park entrance fees differ between residents and foreigners.
