This Peru journey invites you to explore Cusco and Puno, two remarkable destinations nestled within the Peruvian Altiplano, boasting incredible attractions like the iconic Machu Picchu and the serene Lake Titicaca.
The itinerary is flexible, allowing you to commence your adventure in either Cusco or Puno, with the option to adjust the order of excursions as desired.
Tour Description
DAY 1. ARRIVAL IN CUSCO.
Upon your arrival in Cusco, a driver will transfer you to your hotel located in the historic center of the city. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure to acclimate to the high altitude. Overnight stay at the hotel.
DAY 2. SACRED VALLEY/ AGUAS CALIENTES.
We'll collect you from your Cusco hotel to embark on a tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our first stop is the quaint town of Pisac, 20.5 miles away, renowned for its vibrant craft market and ancient stone Inca sites offering breathtaking valley views and remarkable terraces.
After exploring Pisac's market, we proceed to Urubamba for a traditional Peruvian lunch at a riverside restaurant. This buffet features regional specialties, including alpaca and trout.
Our journey continues to Ollantaytambo, situated 2,792 meters above sea level. The impressive Inca ruins here were once a military, religious, and agricultural hub, boasting stunning views and a sophisticated irrigation system.
Ascend the steps to the top of the Fortress and visit key sites like the ceremonial Temple Hill. Explore areas including the famed wall of the six monoliths, also known as the Temple of the Sun.
At the agreed time, board the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes to prepare for one of the Seven Wonders of the World. After a one and a half-hour train ride, arrive in Aguas Calientes, where our staff will escort you to your hotel. A briefing about the next day's Machu Picchu tour will follow.
DAY 3. MACHU PICCHU /CUSCO.
Board a bus for a 30-minute ride up the winding road to Machu Picchu, enjoying spectacular views of the Urubamba River and canyon. The astounding "Old Mountain" reveals terraces, ceremonial sites, stairways, and urban sectors that exude energy.
After a 2.5-hour guided tour, take the opportunity to explore Machu Picchu independently or opt to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountains (optional).
You may also choose to return to Aguas Calientes for lunch (optional) at one of its excellent restaurants offering delicious Peruvian cuisine.
At the agreed time, catch the train back to Ollantaytambo and then a tourist bus to Cusco, where you'll be dropped off at your hotel in the historic center.
DAY 4. CUSCO / PUNO.
Board the tourist bus in Cusco for a one-hour journey to the stunning south valley, stopping first at Andahuaylillas at 3,093 meters above sea level.
This charming Andean town is home to the "Sistine Chapel," a 17th-century architectural gem adorned with gold leaf and Cusco School paintings.
Inside the Church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas, admire Baroque-style ceilings and walls featuring works by Peruvian painter Luis de Reaño. This site is a must-see on your travel bucket list.
Continue the bus ride for 1.5 hours to the Raqchi archaeological site, located at 3,450 meters above sea level. The 15th-century Temple of Wiracocha, beside the Vilcanota River, showcases massive walls, aqueducts, and tombs.
Discover the circular storehouses, or Colcas, used for storing grains like quinoa, potatoes, and corn. Raqchi is also part of the fascinating Inca Trail.
The tour proceeds to Sicuani city for a buffet lunch featuring local and regional dishes, vegetables, desserts, and hot drinks like mate de coca.
After a 40-minute bus ride, reach La Raya Pass, the tour's highest point at 4,335 meters above sea level, marking the border between Cusco and Puno. Pause to admire the snow-capped Chimboya and capture scenic photos.
The final stop is the Pucara Museum, an hour from La Raya Pass. The museum displays monoliths, stone sculptures, and ceramics from the Pucara culture, which thrived in the highlands of Peru and Bolivia.
Conclude the journey with a two-hour bus ride to Puno, passing through Juliaca and arriving at the Puno bus station by 05:00 p.m.
Transfer to your Puno hotel for an overnight stay.
DAY 5. UROS AND TAQUILE ISLANDS.
After breakfast at your Puno hotel, transfer to the lakeport for a boat ride to the Uros floating islands.
Experience the unique lifestyle and traditions of the local community, home to over 200 families. The half-day tour at Uros Islands concludes here.
Continue with a 1.5-hour boat trip to Taquile Island, a Quechua-speaking region formerly part of the Inca Empire, with remnants visible in its structures.
Taquile, the second-largest island in Lake Titicaca, spans 3.4 miles and is famous for its textiles, recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage. Its highest point reaches 4,050 meters above sea level.
Enjoy a traditional Andean lunch, then return to Puno's port, where transport will take you back to your hotel.
DAY 6. SILLUSTANI AND TRANSFER OUT.
Your day begins with a pick-up from your Puno hotel, heading to the Sillustani archaeological site. This remarkable complex, set atop a peninsula on Lake Umayo's shores, lies 22.3 miles from Puno city and Lake Titicaca.
Discover the approximately 90 funerary towers constructed by the Kolla culture, an Aymara community predating the Inca Empire. Many mummies, including priests, leaders, and nobles, were found inside, positioned in fetal postures with belongings like gold, silver, and ceramics.
The Sillustani tour continues with a visit to a local alpaca-breeding family, where you'll learn about their food processing, lifestyle, weaving techniques, and ancestral customs.
Conclude your visit with a transfer to Juliaca Airport.
