Tour Description

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN LIMA
Upon your arrival at Lima airport, we will provide transportation to your hotel situated in the vibrant heart of Lima. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. Overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 2: LIMA CITY TOUR AND LARCO MUSEUM
In the morning, embark on a captivating city tour of Lima, starting at the renowned Larco Museum in the quaint district of Pueblo Libre. Established by Peruvian archaeologist Rafael Larco Hoyle in 1926, this museum resides in an 18th-century mansion adorned with expansive and charming gardens.

The Larco Museum is a treasure trove, showcasing an extensive collection of over 5,000 pre-Hispanic ceramic artifacts, alongside gold and silver treasures, and pre-Columbian erotic pottery. Stroll through its impressive galleries in chronological sequence, gaining insights into the fascinating ancient Peruvian civilizations.

Next, we'll journey to Lima’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, home to splendid plazas, colonial estates, and rich historical narratives. Visit the Aliaga House, a colonial mansion constructed in 1536, famous for its stunning rooms enriched with priceless art and history. Remarkably, descendants of Jerónimo de Aliaga, a Spanish conquistador and ally of Francisco Pizarro, continue to inhabit this architectural marvel.

We will proceed to the Plaza de Armas, where Lima was founded in 1535 and where Peru’s independence was proclaimed in 1821. During the viceroyalty, it was a bustling marketplace and a site for public executions.

From the Plaza de Armas, admire historical landmarks such as the Government Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Municipal Palace, and other significant colonial edifices. Visit Lima’s Cathedral, a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site, constructed during the Spanish conquest in the 16th century.

After the tour, you will be returned to your hotel. Overnight stay.

At the designated time, transfer to Lima airport for your flight to Arequipa. Upon arrival, you will be escorted to your hotel in the city center.

Begin the city tour at the picturesque Plaza de Armas, one of Peru's most stunning squares, and the adjacent Arequipa Cathedral, constructed in the 17th century. Explore the Cathedral and the Church of the Society of Jesus (1590), a prime example of local baroque architecture adorned with exceptional paintings and frescoes.

Visit the remarkable Monastery of Santa Catalina, an authentic medieval cloister established in September 1579, still operational today. Covering 20,000 square meters, this enigmatic convent is crafted from sillar, the primary material of local architecture.

Explore the districts of Yanahuara and Carmen Alto, offering breathtaking views of Arequipa’s countryside and the surrounding volcanoes: Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu. Enjoy time for photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Essential Peru tour package typically includes accommodation with breakfast, airport-hotel-airport transfers, guided tours in Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu, entrance fees to the attractions listed in the itinerary, train tickets to/from Aguas Calientes and bus tickets to the citadel, a Spanish-speaking or bilingual guide, and on-site assistance. International flights (and sometimes domestic flights), unspecified meals, tips, personal expenses, and travel insurance are usually not included. Inclusions may vary depending on the hotel category (3, 4, or 5 stars) and the season. We recommend carefully reviewing the "Includes/Does Not Include" section of the tour and requesting an updated, personalized quote.

Essential Peru is a classic tour of Peru that, according to the operator, lasts between 7 and 10 days. The typical itinerary combines city and culture: arrival in Lima with a city tour, flight to Cusco, acclimatization time, excursion to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, train to Aguas Calientes, and a guided visit to Machu Picchu, with return to Cusco. Optional excursions such as Maras and Moray, Rainbow Mountain, Arequipa, and Lake Titicaca can be added, depending on availability and budget. The order of activities may vary due to train and entrance fees. It is advisable to book in advance and confirm each day and time in the final travel documents.

The best time to travel to Cusco and Machu Picchu as part of an Essential Peru tour is usually during the dry season (May to September), with sunny days and cool nights at high altitude. The rainy season runs from November to March: the landscapes are greener, but afternoon showers and occasional tour rescheduling are possible. April and October are good months to be in between, with a good balance between weather and crowds. We recommend packing layers of clothing, a waterproof jacket, hiking boots, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. In Lima, the climate is milder and more humid. Machu Picchu is open year-round; check ticket availability in advance.

The circuit is moderately demanding, involving hiking, uneven stairs, and altitude. Cusco is located at approximately 3,400 meters above sea level, and Machu Picchu at around 2,430 meters above sea level; altitude sickness (soroche) may affect some travelers. For a safe trip, we recommend spending 1–2 days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, staying hydrated, eating light meals, avoiding alcohol and strenuous activity on the first day, and consulting your doctor if you have heart or respiratory conditions or are pregnant. Consider travel insurance and preventative medication if needed. Private or leisurely tours are ideal options to manage your effort.

The price of the Essential Peru tour varies depending on the season (high/low), hotel category, advance booking, and additional services. It is generally quoted per person based on double occupancy and includes local taxes. A non-refundable deposit is usually required to secure train seats and Machu Picchu entrance tickets; changes and cancellations are subject to the policies and penalties of hotels, trains, and tour operators. We recommend booking 60–90 days in advance during peak season, reviewing terms and conditions, and purchasing travel insurance with cancellation coverage. Documentation: Valid passport; citizens of several countries do not require a tourist visa for short stays in Peru (please check current requirements).
