Populating Boyacá

We meet at 9 AM at the designated pick-up point in Villa de Leyva, ready to start our adventure through Boyacá. We depart early to maximize our day and discover the most captivating towns in the region:

* Paipa >> Our journey begins in Paipa, situated just 14 kilometers from Tunja. Famous for its relaxing hot springs and the scenic Sochagota Lake, Paipa also stands out as a key historical location in Colombia’s independence. It was here, during the 1819 Battle of Vargas Swamp, that Simón Bolívar’s troops achieved a significant victory over the royalist army, marking a turning point in the nation’s quest for freedom. As we explore the area, we will delve into this pivotal event and take in the beautiful lake views.

* Vargas Swamp >> Next, we head to the Vargas Swamp, an essential site in Colombia’s national history. Set amidst breathtaking landscapes, this is where the decisive battle that helped secure Colombia’s independence took place. We’ll pause to reflect on these historic moments and appreciate the significance of this landmark.

* Iza >> After immersing ourselves in the history of Paipa and Vargas Swamp, we continue to Iza, a quaint colonial town renowned for its charming cobblestone streets and classic architecture. Wandering its picturesque lanes, we’ll experience the cultural wealth of its warm residents, famous for their hospitality and delicious traditional desserts. Iza’s peaceful ambiance is perfect for absorbing the authentic spirit of Boyacá.

* Cuitiva >> Our adventure leads us to Cuitiva, well-known for its sacred lagoon, cherished by the local community. Located at 3,000 meters above sea level, Cuitiva offers sweeping views of the moorlands and a unique chance to understand the cultural and ecological significance of these high-altitude areas. Here, we’ll enjoy the tranquility and spiritual energy of this remarkable natural setting.

* Lake Tota >> We arrive at Lake Tota, Colombia’s largest lake and one of the highest in South America, situated at 3,015 meters above sea level. This stunning lake not only boasts breathtaking scenery but is also a favorite spot for water activities like boating and fishing.

* Playa Blanca >> On the shores of Lake Tota, we visit Playa Blanca, a natural gem with pristine waters and white sandy beaches. It’s the ideal spot to unwind, swim, and savor the peaceful natural surroundings. Here, guests can participate in optional water activities and admire the panoramic views of the lake and nearby mountains.

* Nobsa >> Following our time at Lake Tota, our route takes us to Nobsa, famed as the weaving capital. We’ll explore local weaving workshops and discover Boyacá’s rich textile heritage. Visitors can purchase handmade products and observe skilled artisans crafting beautiful items that have been central to the region’s identity and economy for generations.

* Pueblito Boyacense >> Our final stop is Pueblito Boyacense, a delightful replica of Boyacá’s most picturesque towns. Established in 1992, this charming neighborhood recreates the colonial charm and architecture of the region’s traditional communities. Stroll along its cobblestone streets, admire the typical houses, and enjoy local handicrafts.
