Tour Description
Our adventure kicks off in Villa de Leyva, where an expert guide will meet you at your accommodation within the town. The activity can commence anytime between 9 AM and 2 PM; however, we suggest an early morning start to fully enjoy your explorations.
We will depart from Villa de Leyva, heading northwest to the municipality of Gachantivá. Our journey will take us along traditional rural paths. Boyacá, located in central Colombia, is celebrated for its diverse and stunning landscapes, which include fertile valleys and highlands, where the climate varies widely from cold to warm.
In about 40 minutes, we'll reach our first stop: the Molino de La Primavera Museum. This colonial relic is situated on the verdant plains surrounding the Cane River. Inside, you'll find parts of the rodezno machinery, once used by local farmers for grinding wheat and corn grains.
Dating back to 1630, this mill was a central hub for flour production for over three centuries. Its name, Primavera, reflects the exceptional quality of the flour it produced.
We'll explore the entire estate and learn from the expert guide about the ancient flour production process, the tools, ancestral artifacts, and the significant role this region played as the granary of ancient Colombia, also known as New Granada.
After our museum visit, we will indulge in a delicious traditional snack, featuring authentic arepas crafted from flour made by local hands, paired with a delightful hot coffee.
From Gachantivá, we will continue to Sutamarchan, a 30-minute drive away. Here, we will visit our second destination, the Olivanto Orchard. This orchard is remarkable for housing the olive trees nearest to the equator and at the highest altitude worldwide. This dream was initiated in the 1950s by Mr. Antonio María Cortés Robles, an agricultural expert and Boyacá native.
During our orchard tour, we will visit the Olivo Museum, which chronicles the history of olive cultivation in Colombia and the sustainability challenges it faces. We will also stop by The Olive Tree Artisanal Products Shop and the Olive Tree Nursery, showcasing various productive varieties.
We will delve into different methods and exquisite olive-based preparations, sampling a range of unique oils, from the mildest to the most robust, all locally produced. You'll learn to identify the distinct flavor profiles and characteristics of each olive oil, capturing the essence of local craftsmanship on your palate.
After exploring these two rural treasures, we'll return to Villa de Leyva, with memories rich in authenticity, flavors, and regional traditions, eager to continue discovering more of this enchanting Colombian destination.
