Frequently Asked Questions

Generally, the tour includes a certified bilingual local guide, instruction and safety briefing, kayak (single or double), paddles, spray skirt, and life jacket, as well as safety equipment and a first-aid kit. It usually includes a snack or light boxed lunch and hydration, and basic operator insurance. Depending on the plan, it may include transfers from Puerto Varas or Puerto Montt to the Reloncaví Fjord and digital photographs. Local taxes and entrance fees, if applicable, are detailed at the time of booking. Always check what is excluded: appropriate personal clothing, tips, personal expenses, and rental of extra equipment. The itinerary and services may be adjusted due to weather and tides to ensure a responsible tourism experience.

This activity is suitable for beginners with basic fitness and a desire for an adventure in Chilean Patagonia. The tour takes place in relatively sheltered waters of the fjord, although wind and currents can vary. Before boarding, the guide provides technical and practical instruction. Stable kayaks are used, and the group's pace is adjusted. No prior experience is necessary; however, you must know how to swim and follow instructions. Minimum age and restrictions (pregnancy, back injuries, weight/height) may vary depending on the operator, so it's advisable to confirm them at the time of booking. If you have any questions, request an easy route or a private tour from Puerto Varas.

Dress in layers for the Patagonian climate: thermal base layer, fleece, and windproof/waterproof jacket. Avoid cotton; opt for synthetic fabrics or merino wool. Wear water shoes or closed-toe sneakers that can get wet, a hat, sunglasses with a strap, and sunscreen. Bring a reusable water bottle, a personal snack if desired, a change of dry clothes and a small towel for the return trip, as well as a waterproof inner tube or dry bag. Insect repellent and a dry bag for documents, cash, and phone are recommended. The operator provides kayaks, paddles, spray skirts, and life jackets. On cold days, add gloves and a buff. Inquire about lockers or transportation from Puerto Varas/Puerto Montt.

The best time for kayaking in the Reloncaví Fjord is between spring and summer (approximately October to April), when the days are longer and milder in the Lake District. Even so, the weather is changeable: rain, cloud cover, and Patagonian winds are possible, especially in the afternoon. Many trips are scheduled for the morning, when the waters are usually calmer. Paddling is also possible in autumn and winter, provided conditions permit and appropriate clothing is worn. Tides affect the itinerary and landings. For safety reasons, the operator may reschedule or adjust the excursion. Check the forecast 24–48 hours in advance.

The usual meeting point is Puerto Varas or areas near the Reloncaví Fjord (Ralún, Cochamó, Ensenada), with the option of transfer from Puerto Montt depending on availability. The excursion can be a half-day or full-day trip, depending on the itinerary and the group's pace. It is recommended to book in advance during peak season and confirm departure the day before, as it is subject to weather and tide conditions. Cancellation, change, and refund policies vary by operator; please review the terms and coverage of your travel insurance. Bring your ID and arrive early for the safety briefing.
