Discover Ancud And The Puñihuil Penguin Colony

Today, embark on a remarkable journey on Chiloé Island with our exhilarating excursion to Ancud, Caulin, and the Puñihuil Penguin Colony.

We commence our adventure by departing from our hotel in Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas, heading towards the charming Town of Pargua. Here, we board a ferry to traverse the Chacao Channel, reaching the legendary Isla Grande de Chiloé. During this 45-minute crossing, you'll have the chance to observe sea lions at play, pelicans soaring above, and a plethora of marine birds, all of which immerse you in the natural splendor of the region.

Upon arrival in Chacao, we explore this delightful town, known for its larch wood architecture and the iconic San Antonio de Chacao Church, a designated National Monument. We then proceed along the scenic coastal route to Caulin, renowned for its intertidal wetland. This area boasts a rich array of birdlife, including black-necked swans, herons, and flamingos, which are particularly prominent during the winter months. This distinctive landscape invites you to connect with nature while savoring the tranquility of the surroundings.

Around midday, we reach Puñihuil Beach, where an extraordinary experience awaits: a boat excursion to the islets home to the Puñihuil Penguin Colony. During this 40-minute boat ride (ticket not included), you'll be captivated by the sight of the Magellanic and Humboldt penguins, protected species that thrive in this National Monument due to its ecological significance.

Our final destination is Ancud, where we delve into the island's rich history and culture at the Local Museum, explore the traditional Municipal Market, and visit the impressive Fort of San Antonio. This 18th-century Spanish fortification provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the sea.
