Tour Description

Embark on a captivating horseback riding adventure across Rapa Nui, designed for travelers eager to immerse themselves in the island’s natural beauty, rich history, and stunning volcanic landscapes. This guided tour, of moderate difficulty, spans approximately 3 hours and presents two distinct routes. Both are accessible throughout the year and are conducted by an experienced local guide.

The first route is the Mount Maunga Terevaka Horseback Ride, where you will ascend to the island’s highest peak at 530 meters above sea level. The journey kicks off with a vehicle transfer to Fundo Vaitea, from where the horseback trek begins, navigating the gentle slopes of the volcanic terrain. Upon reaching the top, you are rewarded with awe-inspiring 360° vistas, showcasing the island’s three points and the expansive ocean beyond. Along the path, you will also witness the Rano Aroi volcano and its lagoon, encircled by indigenous flora. The descent takes you towards the Ahu Akivi region, where you will be collected for the return to Hanga Roa.

The alternative route is the Caverns Horseback Ride, a remarkable journey not recommended for those with claustrophobia. This path delves into significant volcanic caves created by ancient lava flows, visiting Ana Kakenga, Ana Te Pora, and Ana Te Pahu. Ana Kakenga is renowned for its dual subterranean tunnels opening onto a sea-facing cliff; Ana Te Pora is notable for its spacious interior; and Ana Te Pahu holds historical significance, having been a sanctuary for the Rapa Nui people during enslavement. Inside these caverns, you will discover remnants of ancient kitchens, cultivation areas, and petroglyphs. The excursion concludes with a return to the initial stable, followed by a transfer back to your accommodation.

Each horseback tour includes one horse per participant, complete safety riding gear, flashlights for the cavern exploration, and pick-up and drop-off from centrally located hotels. Please note that National Park entry fees, meals, and drinks are excluded. Departure options are available in the morning or afternoon, with times subject to reconfirmation.
