Tour Description

DAY 1

Upon your arrival at Iquitos airport, we will greet you and provide a road transfer to the port of Nauta, approximately 1.5 hours from the city. Here, we'll board boats, and during the rainy season, we have the chance to visit the Casual Fundo as we journey downriver. Upon reaching the Pacaya Samiria Lodge, you'll be welcomed by a member of the KukamaKukamiria culture with a refreshing natural fruit juice.

The Pacaya Samiria Amazon Lodge is situated deep in the Peruvian jungle, on the left bank of the Marañon River, southwest of Iquitos. The Pacaya Samiria Reserve hosts the Amazon's largest floodplain forest, home to significant wildlife species such as the pink dolphin, cougars, monkeys, birds, and a rich variety of reptiles including alligators and turtles. The rivers are teeming with diverse fish species.

After enjoying lunch, we'll spend an engaging afternoon listening to legends and tales about the enigmatic Amazon rainforest. Following this, we'll embark on a night tour around the lodge, searching for spiders, snakes, frogs, and a variety of nocturnal insects. Dinner will be served at the lodge, where we'll spend the night.

DAY 2

Following a hearty breakfast, we'll begin a walking tour through the jungle to marvel at the incredible diversity of flora and fauna and learn about the powerful medicinal plants that thrive here. This area boasts over 900 types of wild flowers and delicious tropical fruits such as Camu Camu, Aguaje, and Ají Charapita. We'll return to the lodge for a traditional local lunch.

In the afternoon, we'll visit the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, known as the "Jungle of Mirrors." In 1982, this section of the Amazon jungle was declared a protected natural area to safeguard its vast array of exotic fauna and flora, natural resources, and endangered species like the black lizard and giant otter.

We'll explore the jungle by boat, where you'll have the chance to see magnificent pink dolphins and sloths. You can also try your hand at piranha fishing before we return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

DAY 3

After breakfast, we'll embark on our final day's journey to the Marañon River and Cocha Shiriyacu (depending on the season and fishing conditions). We will visit the San Jorge community and their craft center, where you'll have the opportunity to purchase beautiful handicrafts. We'll then return to the lodge for lunch.

At the designated time, we'll head back to the city of Iquitos.

Frequently Asked Questions

A tour to a lodge in Pacaya Samiria National Reserve typically includes: accommodation in an eco-lodge, full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), purified water, transfers from Iquitos to Nauta by road and boat to the lodge, day and night excursions with a bilingual naturalist guide, safety equipment, and, in many cases, rubber boots and ponchos. Entrance fees to the reserve are often included as well. Flights, alcoholic beverages, special snacks, tips, and travel insurance are usually not included. Activities and schedules vary depending on the trip's duration (3, 4, or more days). We recommend confirming exact inclusions before booking your tour.

The Peruvian Amazon is warm and humid year-round (25–32°C). From December to May (high water/rainy season), the rivers swell, making it easy to navigate by canoe through flooded forests and observe wildlife from the water. From June to November (low water/dry season), there are more river beaches, hikes along firm trails, and excellent opportunities for fishing and spotting pink river dolphins. Both seasons are ideal for nature tourism and photography. Rainfall is unpredictable; pack a lightweight raincoat. For a balanced experience, many travelers choose the end of the season. Check lodge availability, as tour logistics may vary depending on river levels.

For the Amazon excursion, pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts and pants, a raincoat/poncho, trekking boots (or rubber boots if provided by the operator), sandals, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET or icaridin, a headlamp, a portable charger, binoculars, a camera, a dry bag/Ziplock, and a reusable water bottle. Add a personal first-aid kit (pain relievers, antihistamines, bandages, and rehydration salts). For health, a yellow fever vaccination is recommended (at least 10 days prior to the trip), and consider vaccinations for hepatitis A and typhoid fever; discuss malaria prophylaxis with your doctor. Purchase travel insurance with medical and evacuation coverage. Inform your doctor of any allergies or dietary restrictions when booking.

Tours to the Pacaya Samiria lodge are conducted with accredited local guides, safety briefings, life jackets while navigating, and adherence to responsible tourism protocols in protected areas. It's a moderate-level nature and adventure experience: jungle hikes, heat and humidity, and boat trips. It's generally suitable for travelers with a basic level of fitness and families with older children (approximately 6–8 years old), provided they follow the guide's instructions. It's not ideal for people with very limited mobility or advanced pregnancy. Stay hydrated, use sunscreen and insect repellent, and respect the wildlife (do not touch or feed it). Ask about private tours or adapted paces if needed.

A classic itinerary from Iquitos includes a transfer to Nauta and a boat trip to the lodge. Activities combine early morning birdwatching excursions, boat and canoe trips through streams and lagoons, interpretive hikes through the rainforest, piranha fishing, and nighttime wildlife viewing. Depending on the season, the tour includes visits to flooded forests or river beaches and often to riverside communities focused on sustainable tourism. Iconic wildlife includes pink and gray river dolphins, monkeys, sloths, caimans, tree frogs, macaws, toucans, and a wide variety of Amazonian flora. The most common tour duration to the lodge is 3 to 5 days, with activities adjusted according to water levels and weather conditions.
