Tour Description

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN IQUITOS

Upon your arrival at Iquitos airport, or if you are already in a downtown hotel, we will pick you up early in the morning. Our transport will drive us to the port of Nauta, located two hours from Iquitos, where we will embark on a one-hour boat journey to an incredible ecolodge nestled in the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo reserve, along the Yanayacu River's banks.

This reserve is situated in the Loreto department, close to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. After settling in at the lodge, you'll savor a buffet lunch featuring healthy and organic ingredients.

Your jungle adventure kicks off by meeting the smallest monkey, the Pygmy Marmoset, also known as the Pocket Monkey. We will stroll through the lodge's botanical garden to admire various medicinal plant species and discover the process of composting.

In the evening, we'll dine at the lodge before embarking on an exciting nocturnal boat excursion to spot caimans, mammals, and birds of the night.

DAY 2: EXPLORING THE AMAZON RAINFOREST

After a hearty breakfast, we begin a boat exploration on the Amazon River, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. We will also look for pink and gray dolphins, which are frequently seen in the area.

During the excursion, we will take you to see the world's largest aquatic plant, the Victoria Regia, and observe majestic iguanas in their natural habitat. At noon, we return to the lodge for a buffet featuring local and international dishes.

In the afternoon, we'll engage in piranha fishing with handcrafted rods, an activity that everyone will enjoy. We will witness the stunning sunset over Sapote Lagoon.

Return to the lodge to unwind with a delicious dinner. At night, we will embark on a walk to discover giant frogs and tarantulas.

DAY 3: NATIVE COMMUNITY AND JOURNEY'S END

Early in the morning, enjoy breakfast in the lodge's welcoming dining room. We will board the boat for an excursion to spot various bird and monkey species.

The Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Regional Communal Conservation Area is a protected natural area in Loreto. We will visit the San Juan de Yanayacu Community to learn about their customs and traditions. During the high-water season, this indigenous village resides in floating houses and uses canoes for transportation.

Upon returning to the lodge, you will have free time to relax in hammocks or partake in activities such as kayaking or swimming in the river.

Enjoy our final lunch at the lodge before boarding the boat back to the port of Iquitos, a one-hour boat trip. Upon reaching Nauta, transportation will be provided either to the Iquitos airport or your reserved hotel in the city.

The Peruvian Amazon is a year-round destination. During the high-water season, roughly from November to April, there is more rainfall, swollen rivers, and easier boat access to floodplains, ideal for boating and birdwatching. During the low-water season, from May to October, conditions are better for hiking, river beaches, and fishing, although there may be more insects. The climate is warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 32°C (75 to 90°F) and high humidity. Pack a lightweight raincoat, quick-drying clothing, and sun protection. For nature tourism, both seasons offer distinct experiences. Book in advance during peak season.

Reputable tour operators in Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo implement safety protocols, provide life jackets on river transfers, and employ certified guides. Safety also depends on following instructions, maintaining a safe distance from wildlife, and using appropriate equipment. For health, a yellow fever vaccination is recommended, as well as up-to-date tetanus and hepatitis vaccinations, as advised by a doctor. Inquire about malaria prophylaxis based on your medical history and destination. Bring insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin, a personal first-aid kit, antihistamines, and oral rehydration salts. Purchase travel insurance with medical and evacuation coverage. Inform your guide of any allergies or pre-existing conditions. Stay hydrated, wear long sleeves, and boots.

For this ecotourism tour, pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts and pants, a raincoat, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, strong insect repellent, a headlamp, a water bottle, waterproof bags for electronics, and a rain cover. Add a personal first-aid kit, a quick-drying towel, and external batteries. Ecolodges in the reserve typically offer rooms with mosquito nets, natural ventilation, solar panels or generator power during limited hours, treated water, and showers. Wi-Fi is often limited or nonexistent, ideal for disconnecting and responsible tourism. Sustainable practices such as waste management and water conservation are promoted.
