Tour Description

DAY 1

Our adventure begins bright and early with a pickup from your hotel in the city of Cusco. The journey will lead us through charming villages until we reach the town of Paucartambo, situated at 2,906 meters above sea level. This picturesque town is renowned for the La Virgen del Carmen festival.

As we continue our tour to Manu, we will enjoy lunch en route to the Cloud Forest. Along this path, you'll have the opportunity to marvel at stunning flora and fauna, including orchids, bromeliads, and the Peruvian national bird, the cock of the rock.

Manu National Park spans the regions of Cusco and Madre de Dios, encompassing 2 million hectares and divided into three zones: the Manu reserved zone, the cultural zone, and the restricted zone.

We'll arrive at our lodge in the cultural zone of Manu for the night. This rustic lodge offers delightful trails spanning 5 kilometers, perfect for exploring with a professional guide. Enjoy a delicious dinner.

DAY 2

We begin our day early with a brief tour to spot the iconic Peruvian bird known as the Cock of the rock. After returning to the lodge for breakfast, we continue our journey to the town of Pilcopata.

For the adventurous, there's an option to try Rafting, an exhilarating activity on the Koñeq or Alto Madre de Dios rivers, featuring class I and II rapids, for one thrilling hour.

Our tour then proceeds to the Manu National Park, where we'll head to the Port of Atalaya for a boat ride to our second lodge, nestled near the river Alto Madre de Dios, surrounded by 90 hectares of vibrant jungle biodiversity.

We'll explore the vicinity of the lodge, wandering along nearby trails to admire diverse plant species. Later, we'll embark on a night tour to discover insects and amphibians. All meals are included today.

DAY 3

During our morning walk, our guide will discuss the area's rich biodiversity, the ecological systems established to preserve these regions, and the importance of sustainable development. We will cross the river by boat and take a 30-minute walk to observe the stunning local flora.

The day in Manu continues as we head to Machuwasi Lagoon. Here, we'll paddle in rustic canoes to observe local wildlife, including birds, monkeys, and alligators. Manu is part of the world network of Biosphere Reserves.

In the evening, we'll embark on a walking night tour around the lodge to search for insects. All meals are provided today.

DAY 4

Our day begins early with a boat trip to visit the macaw clay lick, a clay wall that attracts various species of birds seeking nutritional balance. This is a wildlife spectacle not to be missed.

After returning to the lodge, we'll enjoy a boat ride back to the port of Atalaya, where our transport will take us back to the city of Cusco. Lunch is included along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

A tour package to Manu National Park typically includes transfers from Cusco, combined land and river transportation (minibus and motorized boat), accommodation in eco-lodges, full board, a bilingual naturalist guide, and activities such as interpretive hikes, navigating Amazonian rivers, and wildlife viewing (monkeys, macaws, caimans). It often includes entrance fees and permits, basic equipment (rubber boots, life jackets), and a safety briefing. Flights, alcoholic beverages, tips, and personal expenses are not usually included. Groups are small for better wildlife viewing and responsible tourism. Please verify the exact itinerary and inclusions before booking your Manu Rainforest trip online.

The dry season (approximately May to October) is ideal for a tour of the Manu Rainforest: there is less rain, firmer trails, and better conditions for trekking, boating, and birdwatching at clay licks. It is peak season, so it's advisable to book in advance. The rainy season (November to April) offers lusher rainforest and stronger rivers, but there are frequent downpours and itinerary adjustments may be necessary. Wildlife can be observed year-round in the Peruvian Amazon, with varying species and times of day. Travelers interested in nature photography and ecotourism will enjoy both seasons; bring waterproof gear and be flexible with your itinerary.

The trip usually departs from Cusco (high altitude), so it's advisable to acclimatize for 1–2 nights before descending to the lowland jungle. A yellow fever vaccination is recommended (consult your doctor 4–6 weeks prior), as well as up-to-date tetanus and hepatitis A vaccinations. Malaria prophylaxis should be considered based on your medical history and itinerary. Use insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin, wear long-sleeved clothing, and sunscreen. The jungle tour requires a moderate level of fitness: 2–4 hour hikes on humid trails, heat (25–32°C), and high humidity. The tour operator should provide life jackets, a first-aid kit, and safety protocols. Purchase travel insurance with evacuation coverage.

Pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts, convertible pants, a raincoat or poncho, hiking boots, and sandals for the lodge. Add a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, strong insect repellent, a headlamp with batteries, a power bank, a dry bag, a reusable water bottle, and any personal medications. Useful for nature tourism: binoculars, a camera with a weatherproof cover, and waterproof cases. Bring cash for extra expenses and tips, your passport, travel insurance, and energy snacks. Avoid hard-sided suitcases; opt for a backpack. Keep your weight light: many river routes and Amazonian trails require compact, rainproof gear.

Booking a trip to the Manu Rainforest usually requires a deposit to secure your place; the balance is due a few days before departure. Prices vary depending on the season (high/low), itinerary length, type of accommodation (standard or superior eco-lodge), and whether it's a private or shared service. Group discounts and early bird discounts may be available. Cancellations and changes are processed according to how far in advance you book; please review the policy for refunds and penalties. Payment is typically accepted by card or bank transfer, and an electronic voucher and pre-trip briefing are sent. Please check what is not included (tips, drinks, extras) and reconfirm 48 hours prior to departure.
