Located 68 miles from the city and sitting at 2,906 meters above sea level, Paucartambo is renowned for hosting the significant Festival of Virgen del Carmen.

The tour to Manu continues with a picturesque drive and a lunch stop en route to the Cloud Forest. This area is home to incredible wildlife such as the Spectacled Bear and the Cock of the Rock. Here, you will marvel at various species of plants and flowers, including orchids and bromeliads.

Upon reaching the lodge, situated in the Manu cultural zone at 1,700 meters above sea level, we will rest. This area offers specially designed trails for exploring this part of the Amazon rainforest. The entire circuit spans approximately 5 kilometers, and a tour guide will accompany you during the walk.

A delightful dinner awaits you.

DAY 2

We will start the day with a sunrise boat ride to spot the renowned Cock of the Rock, Peru's national bird, known for its strikingly colorful plumage.

Following breakfast, we'll head to the charming town of Pilcopata, situated at 589 meters above sea level. The Manu National Park lies between Cusco and Madre de Dios and is divided into three zones: the cultural zone, the reserved zone, and the protected area.

If you're up for it, you can engage in a thrilling hour of rafting on the Koñeq River and upper Madre de Dios River, featuring class I and II rapids. Enjoy the stunning landscapes and take a refreshing dip in the river to conclude this exciting adventure.

Later, we'll head to Atalaya Port to board a boat and explore the remarkable species of birds in the area, ultimately arriving at the lodge where we will spend the next three nights, deep within the Peruvian jungle.

The lodge features a trail circuit that can be explored at any time with a tour guide. This day includes both lunch and dinner.

DAY 3

In the early morning, we will embark on a walking tour to observe the wildlife surrounding the lodge and gain insights into the local flora and fauna from our expert guide.

After breakfast, the tour includes a boat ride across the river, followed by a 30-minute walk to discover plants and flowers, such as medicinal plants and various tropical fruits.

Upon arrival at the lagoon of Machuwasi, we'll paddle in canoes to continue searching for species of mammals in their natural habitat. This captivating jungle is home to numerous species of butterflies as well as species of reptiles and giant otters.

We'll embark on a night tour near the lodge to spot insects and nocturnal animals. This day includes all meals.

DAY 4

We begin the day with a special tour, exploring the jungle on a morning walk to admire an impressive kapok tree with its striking roots. Relish the splendor of the surrounding wild vegetation.

Manu National Park is a protected natural area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

We will return to the lodge for breakfast, then take a boat ride to the Madre de Dios River to reach the Aguas Calientes pools during an exhilarating hour-and-a-half tour.

Refresh yourself with a swim in the river while admiring the breathtaking Peruvian jungle and savoring a delicious lunch.

We'll enjoy some well-deserved relaxation at the lodge, followed by a delicious dinner. Drift off to sleep to the symphony of insects, animals, and birds—a unique experience not to be missed.

DAY 5

Our final day begins with a morning tour to visit a macaw clay lick, a clay wall used for nutritional balance by various birds such as the blue-headed parrot, Maracano macaw, and the white-eyed parakeet.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Manu tour package typically includes: land and river transportation from Cusco, accommodation in eco-lodges, full board, a bilingual naturalist guide, Manu National Park entrance fees and permits, rain boots/ponchos, and activities such as jungle hikes, river navigation, and visits to macaw clay licks and lakes. It usually does not include: flights, alcoholic beverages, extra snacks, tips, personal expenses, vaccinations or prophylaxis, or travel insurance (highly recommended). Check if the price covers optical equipment (binoculars) and if there are surcharges for single rooms or off-route transfers. Also, confirm the group size.

The best time for this trip is the dry season (approximately May to September): less rain, more passable trails, and a greater chance of spotting wildlife along riverbanks and at clay licks. During the rainy season (November to March), the Peruvian Amazon is greener, rivers rise, and logistical delays may occur. October and April are transitional months. The climate is hot and very humid (20–32 °C), with heavy downpours and morning fog. Plan activities for dawn and dusk to maximize your chances of observing birds and mammals. Pack waterproof clothing and be flexible with your itinerary due to weather conditions.

For the tour to the Manu Biosphere Reserve, pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long shirts and pants, a raincoat, boots or closed-toe shoes, sandals, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin. Add a headlamp, batteries/power bank, water bottle, binoculars, a camera with a waterproof case, and a dry bag. A basic first-aid kit is also recommended: pain relievers, antihistamines, bandages, anti-diarrheal medication, and electrolyte solutions. A yellow fever vaccination (at least 10 days prior) is recommended, as well as tetanus and hepatitis A boosters; malaria prophylaxis depends on your doctor's recommendations. Purchase travel insurance, bring cash (soles), and avoid wearing perfumes. There are no ATMs or reliable cell phone service.

A classic itinerary from Cusco lasts 4–5 days, exploring the cloud forest and lowland forests; 7–8 day programs venture deeper into Manu National Park. The trip combines road travel and boat trips on rivers like the Alto Madre de Dios, hiking along trails, visits to oxbow lakes, and macaw clay licks at dawn. Difficulty: moderate; hiking in heat, humidity, and mud. Small groups with a bilingual naturalist guide. Accommodation in eco-lodges with limited electricity; cell phone signal and internet are often nonexistent. Early departures maximize wildlife sightings.

Yes, it's a safe tour if you follow the guide's instructions and the rules of Manu National Park. Responsible operators provide life jackets, safety briefings, first-aid kits, and radio or satellite communication. Keep your distance from wildlife, don't feed animals, and stay on marked trails. In sustainable tourism, lodges use solar energy, manage waste, and hire local communities; ask about certifications and their contributions to conservation. Bring a reusable water bottle and avoid single-use plastics. Respect cultural and natural customs. Purchase travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and delays due to weather conditions.
