Tour Description

DAY 1: OLLANTAYTAMBO / MACHU PICCHU: At the designated time, you'll board the train to Aguas Calientes from the Ollantaytambo train station to visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World. After a scenic one-and-a-half-hour train journey, we will arrive at Aguas Calientes train station, where our team will be ready to escort you to your hotel. Later, there will be a brief orientation about the tour to Machu Picchu in your hotel for the following day.

Machu Picchu is situated in the province of Urubamba within the Sacred Valley of the Incas and is part of a protected zone under the National System of Protected Areas of the State. The altitude of Machu Picchu is 2,438 meters above sea level, with a warm and humid climate during the day and cooler temperatures at night.

This enchanting location boasts forests with native trees like cedar and over 400 species of orchids, along with other flowers such as begonias. Spectacular wildlife, including the Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Peru's national bird, inhabits this area.

Machu Picchu town is a quaint village where you can stroll around and explore. If you're interested in local handicrafts or textiles, there's a charming market to visit. Additionally, you may choose to visit the hot springs (optional), an ideal spot for relaxation.

Hotel accommodation in Aguas Calientes is not included.

DAY 2: MACHU PICCHU / CUSCO: This day offers a unique opportunity to explore Machu Picchu at sunrise. You'll board a bus for a 30-minute ascent along a winding road to Machu Picchu, offering stunning views of the Urubamba River and its canyon. Machu Picchu, meaning “Old Mountain,” will captivate you with its terraces, ceremonial sites, steps, and urban areas, radiating energy all around.

This archaeological marvel is divided into two sections. The first area is dedicated to agriculture, featuring expansive terraces and platforms. The second is the urban area where significant religious activities took place. The Inca Empire originated in the Peruvian highlands in the early thirteenth century, reaching its peak with the fall of Inca Atahualpa in 1533.

Constructed in 1450 A.D. during the reign of Inca Pachacutec, the Citadel of Machu Picchu was a vital urban and religious hub for the Incan Empire, the largest civilization of the pre-Columbian era. The inhabitants focused on agriculture, building platforms to cultivate their own food.

Exploring the Inca Trail trek is one of the best ways to experience the lifestyle of the Incan ancestors. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a popular outdoor activity among travelers visiting Cusco.

After a guided tour of two and a half hours, you will have ample time to explore Machu Picchu independently, or if you wish, you can climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountains (optional).

Alternatively, you can take the bus back to Aguas Calientes to enjoy lunch (optional). The town offers excellent restaurants serving delicious Peruvian cuisine.

At the predetermined time, you'll board the train back to Ollantaytambo, followed by a tourist bus to Cusco, where you will be dropped off at your hotel in the historic center of Cusco.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season (May to September), with clearer skies and a lower chance of rain, although it's more crowded. It's advisable to book your train, entrance fee, and guide in advance. During the rainy season (November to March), especially January and February, there are frequent showers, wet trails, and fewer visitors, sometimes with lower prices. The temperature typically ranges from 10°C to 22°C, creating a subtropical microclimate. Pack layers of clothing, a light raincoat, a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Plan for flexible schedules due to possible delays and check the train status to Aguas Calientes on rainy days.

A tour to Machu Picchu typically includes: hotel-train station transfers, tourist train to Aguas Calientes, official bus to the citadel, Machu Picchu entrance with a pre-assigned route, and a bilingual tour guide. The typical itinerary: early departure, scenic train through the Sacred Valley, bus connection, 2–3 hour guided tour with stops at viewpoints, time for photos, and return by bus and train in the afternoon. Lunch, drinks, and tips are not usually included; Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain are optional and subject to availability. Government-issued entrance fees are generally non-refundable, and trains may incur penalties; please check cancellation, change, and schedule policies before booking.

Entrance tickets to Machu Picchu have daily quotas for specific time slots and circuits; it's essential to book 60–90 days in advance during peak season. To issue tickets, you need your valid passport and full name. Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain have very limited spaces and specific times, so they sell out quickly. Tickets are personal and, as a rule, non-transferable; changes are subject to official regulations. On the day of the tour, you must bring your physical passport and a printed or digital ticket. The tour operator coordinates the assignment of circuits and times, optimizing the itinerary and train and bus connections.

For your Machu Picchu tour, bring: your passport, entrance ticket, a small backpack (20–25 L), layered clothing, a raincoat/poncho, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, hiking boots with good traction, a reusable water bottle, light snacks, cash in soles, and a camera. Common site restrictions: large backpacks are not allowed; walking sticks must have rubber tips; drones are prohibited; large tripods and umbrellas are restricted; glass containers and aerosols are not permitted. Bulky luggage must remain at your hotel or in the train's luggage storage. Please be a responsible visitor: do not touch or climb on structures, do not smoke, and avoid leaving any trash.

Machu Picchu is at 2,430 meters above sea level, but acclimatization is usually done in Cusco (3,400 meters) or the Sacred Valley. The standard tour is of moderate difficulty: sections with uneven steps and slopes. To prevent altitude sickness: acclimatize for 1–2 days, stay hydrated, eat light meals, avoid alcohol, walk at a steady pace, and rest when needed. Consult your doctor about acetazolamide or natural alternatives; purchase travel insurance. Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain require a good level of physical fitness. Families with children and seniors can participate in the tour with precautions; accessibility is limited, and the guide will adjust the group's pace.
