Tour Description

DAY 1

We will embark on our journey bright and early, departing from your hotel in Cusco and heading towards the charming Andean village of Paucartambo, located 68 miles from Cusco at an elevation of 2,906 meters above sea level.

The Manu National Reserve lies between the regions of Cusco and Madre de Dios, established as a protected area in 1963. The Manu jungle is divided into three significant zones: the cultural zone, the reserved zone, and the restricted use zone, with the latter being the most protected for scientific research.

We will proceed to descend towards the Cloud Forest, stopping for a delightful lunch along the way. Here, you'll begin to experience the warmer climate and lush surroundings.

After soaking in the breathtaking landscapes, we'll arrive at our lodge situated in the cultural zone of Manu, at an altitude of 1,700 meters. Here, you'll enjoy a well-deserved rest and a delicious dinner, all included.

If you're up for it, you can explore the area by walking along the trails around the lodge with a professional guide.

DAY 2

Early in the morning, we'll seek out the renowned Andean Cock of the Rock, the national bird of Peru. Following this incredible encounter, we'll return to the lodge for breakfast before continuing our journey to the town of Pilcopata.

At this juncture, you have the option to engage in rafting on the Koñeq or Alto Madre de Dios rivers, offering an exhilarating hour and a half of adventure with class I and II rapids.

We'll then proceed to the port of Atalaya, located at 700 meters above sea level, to board a boat and journey down the river to our next lodge. Along the way, you'll marvel at the unique and beautiful flora and fauna, including various bird species like herons and vultures.

We can take a pleasant walk around the lodge to appreciate the splendor of the Peruvian jungle. At night, we can embark on a nocturnal walk to observe wild nightlife, including insects and amphibians.

The rustic lodge boasts a network of trails spanning 15 kilometers, which you can explore with a professional guide. All meals are included on this day.

DAY 3

Our final day in Manu kicks off with a boat excursion to the Collpa, a riverbank where a diverse array of bird species gather each morning to consume clay as part of their diet.

The Biosphere Reserve of Manu boasts an astounding variety of wildlife, making it one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. You'll have the opportunity to witness animals in their natural habitats, including endangered species like the giant otter and black caiman.

This remarkable national reserve encompasses diverse ecosystems, ranging from mountainous regions reaching elevations of 4,000 meters above sea level to parts of the Amazon basin lowlands.

We will return to the lodge to board the boat back to the port of Atalaya. Upon arrival, our transportation will take us back to the city of Cusco. This day includes breakfast at the lodge and lunch en route to Cusco.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tour package to the Manu Jungle Lodge typically includes round-trip transfers from Cusco by vehicle and boat, accommodation in an eco-lodge within the Manu Biosphere Reserve, full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), a bilingual naturalist guide, entrance fees and permits, and guided activities (interpretive hikes, river navigation, and nighttime excursions). Rubber boots, a rain poncho, purified water, and a basic first-aid kit are often provided. Alcoholic beverages, tips, personal expenses, travel insurance, medication, and flights are not usually included. This is an ideal nature tour for wildlife and bird watching in the Peruvian Amazon, with a focus on sustainable tourism and small groups.

The typical Manu tour itinerary from Cusco combines the Andes, cloud forest, and lowland rainforest. Day 1: Early departure, Andean viewpoints, and arrival at the lodge. Subsequent days: Navigation on the Alto Madre de Dios/Manu River, hikes through primary and secondary forest, search for monkeys, macaws, toucans, and caimans, a night excursion for wildlife viewing, and, depending on the program, a canopy tour or observation of clay licks. Days begin at dawn to maximize sightings and light for nature photography. On the last day, the return to Cusco is by boat and vehicle. The experience prioritizes safety, minimal environmental impact, and an expert naturalist guide for biodiversity interpretation.

The best time for this trip to the Manu Rainforest is during the dry season, from May to October: there is less rain, the trails are firmer, and there is a greater chance of spotting wildlife and birds. During peak season (June-September), it's advisable to book in advance. From November to April is the rainy season: the rainforest is at its greenest, the rivers rise, and weather delays are possible. Temperatures typically range from 20 to 32°C with high humidity; nights in the cloud forest can be cool. Bring a raincoat and sunscreen year-round. The tour is feasible in any season, adjusting expectations and logistics accordingly.

Access combines land travel and river navigation: departure from hotels in Cusco by minivan/4x4 through the Acjanaco and Paucartambo passes to the cloud forest; then continue by motorboat along the Alto Madre de Dios/Manu River to the lodge. The total journey usually takes 8-10 hours with scenic stops. Soft luggage, a dry bag, and weight limits are recommended for safety on the boat. To fully appreciate the biodiversity of Manu National Park, a 4-day/3-night or 5-day/4-night stay is ideal; a 3-day option is available for a quick introduction. Returns to Cusco are via the same route, generally in the afternoon.

Pack your passport, insect repellent with DEET or icaridin, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, quick-drying shirt and pants, raincoat, headlamp, batteries, binoculars, camera with a protective case, reusable water bottle, and cash in soles. The eco-lodge offers rooms with mosquito nets, showers, and full board; vegetarian/vegan meals are available upon request. Electricity is often limited (solar/generator) during charging times; cell phone signal and Wi-Fi are generally unavailable. Safety: life jackets on the boat, certified naturalist guides, and protocols on trails. Health: yellow fever vaccination recommended (10 days prior) and malaria prophylaxis as advised by a doctor; bring your first-aid kit and travel insurance.
