Frequently Asked Questions

The Lares to Machu Picchu Trek typically lasts 4 days and 3 nights (3- to 5-day options are available). From Cusco, you travel to the Sacred Valley and then to Lares, with time to enjoy its hot springs. The trek passes through Quechua communities, high Andean grasslands, and lagoons, offering an authentic cultural experience in the Andes. You generally descend to Ollantaytambo and take the train to Aguas Calientes to visit Machu Picchu at dawn with a guide. The exact itinerary may change due to weather, logistics, and tour operator, but it combines nature, living culture, and the iconic Inca citadel in a single trip.

The Lares Trek is of moderate to challenging difficulty due to the altitude and elevation changes. It typically crosses passes between 4,200 and 4,600 meters above sea level, with campsites around 3,600–3,900 meters. It is recommended to acclimatize for 2–3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before starting the trek. Drink plenty of water, walk at a steady pace, avoid alcohol, eat light meals, and consider coca or muña infusions. Bring thermal layers and a rain jacket. If you have heart or respiratory conditions, consult your doctor and purchase travel insurance. No technical experience is required, but good physical condition is essential to enjoy this Andean adventure.

The best time for the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu is the dry season (May to September): clearer skies, firm trails, and excellent views of the Andean landscapes. Nights are cold at high altitude, often near freezing. The shoulder seasons (April and October) offer variable weather and fewer crowds. November to March is the rainy season: more precipitation, clouds, mud, and possible route adjustments; in return, lush green mountains and fewer tourists. The Andean weather changes quickly: layers, a raincoat, sunscreen, and a hat are essential. Book well in advance during peak season to secure trains, guides, and Machu Picchu entrance.

Lares trekking tour packages typically include: a bilingual local guide, ground transportation from Cusco to the trailhead, basic camping equipment (tents and cooking equipment), a cook and meals during the trek, muleteers or horses for shared equipment, train transportation between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes, and a guided tour of Machu Picchu with standard entrance. They generally do not include: sleeping bags and trekking poles (optional rentals), travel insurance, tips, personal expenses, bottled drinks, entrance fees to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, and meals in Aguas Calientes. Always check the tour operator's information sheet to confirm inclusions, policies, and baggage restrictions.

Unlike the classic Inca Trail, the Lares Trek doesn't require limited permits; however, you do need to secure your Machu Picchu entrance ticket and train and bus tickets to/from Aguas Calientes. During peak season (June–August and holidays), book 2–3 months in advance; for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, ideally 3–4 months. Have your valid passport ready (the same document required for tickets and access control). Check the operator's change and cancellation policies, and purchase travel insurance with high-altitude coverage. Confirm logistical details in Cusco: pre-trek briefing, equipment list, schedules, and pick-up point.
