Tour Of The Towns Of Quindío: Córdoba, Pijao And Buenavista
Quindío boasts municipalities that many travelers typically overlook. This tour explores three of them— Córdoba, Pijao, and Buenavista —all in a single day, accompanied by a bilingual guide and a small group. These three towns, each with its own unique character, offer wattle and daub architecture, a rich coffee-growing heritage, and a leisurely pace that stands in stark contrast to the busier spots in the region.
A traditional lunch is included, with an optional ride in a Willys Jeep, ensuring your day is fully catered for. This six-hour journey connects the three towns, unveiling a side of the Coffee Region that remains undiscovered by most travelers.
Tour Description
The tour kicks off with a convenient hotel pickup at the prearranged meeting location, followed by a transfer to the southern region of Quindío. Our first destination is Córdoba, a hidden gem among Quindío's lesser-known towns, renowned as the national capital of guadua bamboo. It hosts the National Center for the Study of Guadua Bamboo. With over 65% of its area dedicated to coffee cultivation, this heritage is evident in its architecture, the main square, and the passionate way locals discuss their homeland. The visit starts with a typical snack before delving into the town.
The next stop is Pijao, a place that often surprises newcomers. This quaint town was the first in Latin America to join the Cittaslow Colombia network, advocating for slow, mindful, and eco-friendly tourism. Strolling through its streets provides a deeper understanding of this philosophy: a distinct pace, preserved traditional architecture, and a community life that has withstood the pressures of rural tourism in the Coffee Region.
Buenavista concludes the tour. Known as the Quindío Lookout and the Quindío Window due to its breathtaking views over the department and parts of the Cauca Valley, this destination boasts a strong coffee-growing culture and stands out as one of Quindío's heritage towns with a unique flair. The visit includes a stop at a coffee shop, where visitors can see the entire process from bean to packaging, complete with context and a tasting.
The tour wraps up with a typical lunch included before returning to the pick-up point, approximately six hours after the start.
