Duración: 11 Horas
Today, embark on a journey across the Atacama Desert, renowned as the driest desert on Earth, to uncover landscapes that are truly one-of-a-kind.
We invite you to explore the Salar de Atacama from a distinctive vantage point. Our first stop will be at the Piedras Rojas, remarkable geological formations characterized by their vivid red hue, nestled in the heart of the altiplano. The striking contrast between the crimson rocks and the turquoise waters is utterly breathtaking.
Our journey continues as we arrive at the Altiplanic Lagoons of Miscanti and Meñique. These twin lagoons mirror the awe-inspiring Andes Mountains and the sky in their pristine waters, situated within the Los Flamencos National Reserve.
Following our visit to the twin lagoons, we will proceed to the Chaxa Lagoon, a part of the Salar de Atacama. This salt lagoon draws flamingos and other aquatic birds due to its rich salt content and nutrients. Here, you'll have the chance to witness these magnificent birds in their natural setting.
During our adventure, we will search for an ideal location to enjoy breakfast and lunch. We promise it will be a spot offering the most unforgettable views.
On our way back, we will pass through the quaint town of Toconao. If time permits, we can make a brief stop to explore this charming locale before heading back to San Pedro.

The hike is moderate and takes place at high altitudes, reaching up to 4,200 meters above sea level. Participants are recommended to be in good physical condition and well acclimatized to the altitude to avoid discomfort. Travelers with heart problems, blood pressure, or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor before participating. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing, appropriate hiking shoes, and protect yourself from the sun with a hat and sunscreen.
No prior technical preparation is required, but it is essential to be well acclimatized to the altitude before the trek to get the most out of the experience. Spending a few days in San Pedro de Atacama before the hike can help you adapt. Participants should bring enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day and some light snacks such as nuts or energy bars. It is also important to bring a camera with enough battery or capacity to capture the spectacular landscapes.
The best time to hike to Piedras Rojas and the Altiplano Lagoons is between March and November, when temperatures are more pleasant and there is less chance of rain. During these months, the weather is drier, and conditions for observing wildlife such as flamingos and vicuñas are optimal. However, since the Atacama Desert enjoys clear skies most of the year, even during the summer months, you can enjoy stunning landscapes, provided you take care to protect yourself from the sun.
For this hike, it's recommended to wear warm, layered clothing due to the temperature fluctuations throughout the day, from the chilly morning to the warm desert afternoon. A good pair of hiking boots, a cap or hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential. Don't forget to bring your ID and cash for any local purchases. It's also advisable to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and some energy-boosting snacks for the trip.
