Descripción del Tour:
Today, we embark on an enthralling expedition to uncover the remnants of the past within the world's driest desert, revealing the origins of the remarkable Atacameño culture.
Our Archaeological Tour in San Pedro de Atacama promises an exhilarating journey into the ancient civilizations that once thrived in this mysterious region.
Our adventure begins with a visit to the "Pukará de Quitor". This pre-Incan fortress, spanning 2.5 hectares, is situated at an altitude of 2,440 meters and lies just 3 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama. Perched on a hillside, it holds a strategic vantage point. Constructed from stone and adobe, these structures reflect the robust social organization of the Atacameño ancestors against Spanish conquerors, dating back to the 12th century. Today, they are recognized as a National Monument.
We'll explore this historic landmark before proceeding to the Tulor Village, a site with a history extending over 2,800 years. Archaeology provides essential insights into the ancient facets of this Atacama oasis, tracing back to its initial human occupation.
In 1958, Father Gustavo Le Paige discovered the first remnants of the Village of Tulor, located 6 kilometers south of San Pedro de Atacama. This distinctive tour, often guided by locals, takes us back to the origins and the earliest inhabitants of San Pedro de Atacama. Tulor was constructed directly on clay soil within the San Pedro River drainage area, eventually buried by the encroaching desert.
The village is distinguished by its striking architecture, featuring circular adobe houses that seamlessly integrate with the desert landscape. As you wander through its streets and plazas, the past comes alive, allowing you to immerse yourself in a culture that harmonized with nature and utilized ingenuity to thrive in one of the world's most formidable environments.
Before concluding our historical tour, we will visit the San Pedro "Father Gustavo Le Paige" Archaeological Museum in San Pedro. This museum honors a Jesuit priest who devoted much of his life to discovering, collecting, and studying the archaeological treasures of the area and the town of Licanantay.
After this extraordinary cultural and historical journey, we will return to San Pedro to reflect on the experiences and knowledge gained today.
We look forward to welcoming you—don't miss out!
