Tour Description
This half-day outdoor adventure is perfect for novice trekkers, as the route is not overly challenging but offers an excellent introduction to the Magallanes National Reserve. This protected wooded area boasts a variety of trails ideal for both trekking and mountain biking.
Situated just 8 kilometers to the west of Punta Arenas, this reserve covers an area of 20,878 hectares. Within its bounds lies the Río De las Minas, the site where coal was first discovered, prompting Governor José de los Santos Mardones to relocate the colony from Fuerte Bulnes to the Sandy Point or Punta Arenas region in 1848.
The excursion begins with a journey through various neighborhoods in the southern part of the city, soon transitioning onto a paved road that leads us to the reserve. Upon arrival, we will travel approximately 4 km through the Patagonian forest to reach the trailhead, where a half-hour hike awaits.
During our walk, we will encounter a diverse array of endemic flora, including rosemary, sarsaparilla, devil's strawberry, calafate, murtilla, notro, leñadura, michay, and forests of coigüe and lenga. Birdwatchers can look forward to spotting local avian species such as chunchos, rayaditos, chercanes, cachañas, chincoles, cometocinos, thrushes, and tiuques.
The trail also provides a stunning panoramic view of the De las Minas River Valley as it winds its way to the Strait of Magellan. After this enriching experience, we will retrace our steps back to Punta Arenas, concluding our adventure around noon.
