Day 1: Arrival at Torres del Paine National Park - Trekking to Base Torres
Start your day with breakfast at your hotel, grab your box lunch, and head out to catch the 7:00 am bus (arrive at least 10 minutes early to ensure a smooth departure) to Torres del Paine National Park. Relish the breathtaking landscapes as you make your way to the main entrance at "Laguna Amarga". Register at the Cerro Paine reserve, then after a short 5-minute walk, you'll reach "Central Tower", where you can check in at either the shelter or campsite, depending on your choice. Lighten your load, grab your essentials, and embark on your trek.
The trek begins in the Ascencio Valley, offering stunning forest views. As you approach the final ascent, traverse an expansive field of giant rocks until reaching one of the world's most iconic viewpoints, the famous "Torres Base Viewpoint". At an elevation of 900 meters above sea level, take in the majestic granite towers (north, central, and south) and the shimmering turquoise glacial lake below. At 10:30 am, embark on the Hielos catamaran Patagonicos, sailing for about 35 minutes across Lake Pehoé to reach the Paine Grande Refuge. Your hike to Grey begins here.
Venture through a narrow, winding valley leading to Laguna Los Patos. Progressing further, you'll catch glimpses of the vast Southern Ice Fields and the ice floes of Lake Grey. After passing a blustery viewpoint, the trail descends through a mountainous forest to the Grey shelter. The self-guided W Trek Express is of moderate to challenging difficulty, recommended for hikers in good physical condition with basic mountain experience. Over 4 days, you'll cover approximately 60–75 km, with significant elevation changes along iconic sections: Mirador Base Torres, Valle del Francés, and the Grey sector. You'll hike 6–10 hours per day, depending on weather and pace. The trails are marked, but the Patagonian wind, rain, and sudden weather changes require self-sufficiency and pacing. Train with long hikes and carrying a heavy pack before your trip. Check weather forecasts and allow extra time for connections and navigation.

For this trekking excursion in Torres del Paine, bring waterproof boots, a 30–50 L backpack, a layering system (thermal, fleece, windproof/waterproof), trekking pants, a hat, gloves, a buff, UV sunglasses, sunscreen, a 1–2 L water bottle or soft flask, energy snacks, a headlamp, a first-aid kit, and trekking poles. For camping: bring a -5 to -10 °C sleeping bag, a liner, and a sleeping pad; the tent may be pre-assembled as per the package, and a stove is not required if you book full board. The ideal season for the W Circuit runs from October to April. Summer (December–February) offers longer daylight hours and more amenities, but also stronger winds and higher demand. Spring and autumn offer spectacular scenery and fewer crowds, with cooler temperatures and possible snowfall at higher altitudes. The Patagonian weather is very changeable: you can experience sun, rain, and gusts of wind all in the same day, with temperatures ranging from approximately 0 to 18°C (32 to 64°F). Pack layers of clothing and waterproof gear. Check the forecast before each day (Windguru, Windy, Meteochile) and consider alternative plans. Book in advance during peak season.

For this adventure tour, it's crucial to book several weeks or months in advance, especially for mountain lodges during peak season. Check availability by date and itinerary before booking flights. Transfers from Puerto Natales are usually by regular bus to Laguna Amarga or Pudeto and may be included or offered as an extra depending on the package. Park entrance fees are purchased online. Change/cancellation policies are generally tiered depending on how far in advance you book; some services are non-refundable. Purchase travel insurance with mountain and weather coverage. Receive a pre-trip briefing with vouchers, schedules, maps, and safety recommendations.
