Tour Description

Today, we embark on our adventure departing from the hotel to explore the captivating cultural, agricultural, and religious heritage of Chiloé. Our journey will take us through the charming towns of Dalcahue, Curaco de Vélez, and Achao, where we will visit World Heritage churches, quaint yet fascinating museums, savor traditional cuisine, and explore the renowned Dalcahue craft fair. This fair is celebrated for its 100% Chilote products and is considered one of the most significant markets in the archipelago.

Venturing along secondary roads, we'll gain insight into why the FAO has recognized Chiloé as an Ingenious World Agricultural Heritage Site (GIAHS), a testament to generations of farmers who ingeniously utilized and preserved natural resources. For instance, the cultivation of over 200 varieties of native potatoes stands as a prime example.

In Dalcahue, we'll explore the town, including its iconic craft fair and the Church, which was designated a World Heritage Site in 2000.

Next, we'll cross to Quinchao Island via a ferry. Our path will take us through Huyar and Curaco de Vélez, where we can delve deeper into the area's history, rural communities, architecture, religious traditions, and folklore.

We will then continue our journey to Achao, a town nestled among hills and situated by a shallow beach. This town is a popular destination for inhabitants of the smaller islands as it serves as the main town outside of the Big Island.

Here, we'll discover the distinctive architecture, characterized by houses adorned with tiles of various shapes. Notably, the Santa María de Loreto de Achao Church is located here, a site declared a World Heritage site. It is the oldest church in Chiloé.

Additionally, we will visit Villa Quinchao, home to the largest traditional Chilote churches, before reaching the island's end at the Chequian area.

Throughout our tour, we'll also have the chance to enjoy a delicious and authentic lunch with a local family.

Finally, depending on the season, we'll pause at one of the scenic viewpoints along our route to observe resident birds such as black-necked swans and various species of cormorants and migratory birds, including the notable straight-billed curlew (from November to March) and the striking Chilean Flamingo (from May to August).

This beautiful cultural experience draws us closer to the traditions and local life of the region.
