Tour Description

Embark on this amazing 6-day trek starting in Tilcara, situated in the Jujuy province, where participants gather to commence a trekking adventure that links two distinct ecosystems of northern Argentina. On the first afternoon, you'll meet with the guide for a general orientation and equipment check before resting at the designated accommodation.

The journey kicks off the next day with a transfer to the Devil's Throat, the hike's starting point. From here, you'll begin a gradual ascent to the Hornocal Pass, which rises over 4,000 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the area. The day continues with a descent to the Yuto Pampa Refuge, following a 7- to 9-hour trek that spans approximately 17 kilometers through vast landscapes.

The adventure proceeds along high-altitude paths towards Molulo, navigating mountain trails for several hours until reaching this quaint community, where you will stay overnight in a local family home. The next day, the route traverses the Abra de Potrero pass, a high plateau offering sweeping vistas, before descending to San Lucas after a challenging day of trekking that combines distance and elevation changes.

In the concluding days, the trek moves towards San Francisco, completing another extensive day of hiking through ravines, plains, and valleys. The landscape gradually shifts, leaving behind arid terrains and transitioning to the lush vegetation of the Yungas, highlighting a significant transformation in the natural environment.

Ultimately, the adventure wraps up with a stroll to the Termas del Jordán (depending on availability and season), followed by a transfer to San Salvador de Jujuy.

The Puna to Yungas Crossing itinerary typically covers several days of travel through Northwest Argentina, combining high plateaus, canyons, and cloud forests. Highlights usually include salt flats, volcanoes and high-altitude lakes, panoramic viewpoints, Andean villages with handicrafts, and the lush Yungas rainforest. It's an adventurous 4x4 excursion with photo stops, flora and fauna interpretation (vicuñas and condors), and cultural experiences. The exact duration, schedule, and order of visits may vary depending on the season and weather. Upon booking, you will receive a day-by-day itinerary with distances, transfer times, and planned accommodations.

The tour typically includes transportation in a 4x4 vehicle with an expert driver-guide, a bilingual guide (Spanish/English), accommodation in selected hotels, inns, or mountain huts, and meals as indicated in the program (breakfast and, depending on the departure, a picnic lunch or dinner). Entrance fees and necessary permits, on-the-go assistance, and basic operator insurance are also included. Flights, local taxes or fees, alcoholic beverages, unspecified meals, personal expenses, trekking equipment, and tips are not usually included. Please consult the tour details for specific inclusions/exclusions, accommodation category, baggage allowance, and any applicable supplements for single rooms or special dates.

The trek is of moderate difficulty due to the altitude and mountain trails. High elevations are reached in the Puna region (3,500–4,500 meters above sea level), so it is recommended to acclimatize for 24–48 hours in Salta or Jujuy, stay well hydrated, eat light meals, and avoid alcohol. It is suitable for travelers with a basic level of fitness; those with heart or respiratory conditions, or who are pregnant, should consult their doctor. Children can participate depending on the operator's minimum age. The team is trained in first aid and prioritizes road safety. Travel insurance is recommended. Please inform us of any allergies, dietary restrictions, and medications before confirming your reservation.

Due to the significant temperature difference between the Puna and the Yungas, dress in layers: a thermal base layer, a fleece, and a waterproof/windproof jacket. Add a hat, buff, gloves, trekking pants, thermal socks, and boots with good traction; trekking poles are optional. Essential items include: UV sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle (1–2 L), energy snacks, a headlamp, and a power bank. The best time to visit is usually during the dry season (April–October). In summer (November–March), there is rain, cloud cover, and mud. At higher altitudes, it can be cold and windy even with sunshine; in the Yungas, humidity and drizzle are common. Check the forecast before setting out.

To book the Puna to Yungas Crossing excursion, it's best to do so in advance, as spaces are limited. The final price depends on the season, accommodation category, and number of passengers. Secure online payments are accepted via credit/debit card or bank transfer; a deposit is usually required, with the balance due before departure. After purchase, you will receive a confirmation, electronic voucher, and meeting time/point; some departures include hotel pick-up from centrally located hotels. Cancellation and change policies vary: partial or full refunds are available depending on how far in advance you book. Please review the terms and conditions and any applicable no-show penalties.
