Tour Description
The journey kicks off with the collection of guests in El Peñón, a quaint yet strategically positioned town in the Catamarca Puna. From this starting point, our route takes us to the village of Antofagasta de la Sierra, where the striking Alumbrera-Antofagasta volcanoes await your gaze. The expansive plain and the Cerro San Juan viewpoint present sweeping panoramic vistas of the village and its scenic backdrop, perfect for photography enthusiasts and those who enjoy serene contemplation.
Our adventure continues as we proceed to the Paicuqui viewpoint and the Punilla River, where the landscape transforms dramatically with extraordinary rock formations and a secluded lagoon that captivates with its stillness. We then reach the Salar del Hombre Muerto, an expansive salt flat stretching over 640 km² at an elevation of 4,000 meters. In this awe-inspiring natural setting, visitors can marvel at turquoise lagoons and observe active lithium and potassium mining operations. The area's historical narrative is enriched by the remnants of the ancient Incahuasi Mine, a fascinating blend of archaeology and mining history, featuring mineral tunnels, old smelting furnaces, and a historic cemetery.
The return leg of our journey leads us back through Antofagasta de la Sierra to El Peñón, concluding a 300 km expedition in around 10 hours. This excursion offers a unique blend of breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and thrilling adventure in the Catamarcan Puna.
