Tour Description
Our adventure begins at 9:00 am from the designated meeting point. We depart from Las Grutas and set out on National Route 23 towards Valcheta.
After traveling for an hour, we reach the town of Valcheta, a hidden gem with countless secrets to uncover. Guided by an expert historian, we will delve into the mysteries of this region in Patagonia, Argentina.
Our first stop is the charming local museum, Museo Provincial María Inés Koop, housed in an old power plant. This museum of history and natural sciences offers numerous artifacts that transport us to the past. We'll explore ancient dinosaur eggs, petrified palm shells with their fossil records, Milodon bones, an array of geological stones, ceremonial axes, arrowheads, scrapers, bone tools, and even the fossilized remains of what were once enormous trees that provided shade and sustenance to the prehistoric saurians when the area was a lush tropical forest.
Following the museum, we'll venture into the petrified forest, where towering conifers and palm trees over 30 meters long await. We'll walk paths lined with shrubby vegetation that reveals branches, fruits, and fossilized dates beneath its canopy. Our guides will enlighten us on what Patagonia was like millions of years ago and the gradual changes that have shaped it into its current form, including insights into the fossilization process and its causes.
Next, we head to the Valcheta Artisan Market, offering a close encounter with the Gaucho culture of Patagonia. Here, you can purchase matras, vibrant ponchos crafted from virgin sheep wool, handwoven by Mapuche women. Other local handmade items include key rings, booties, scarves, blankets, table centerpieces, kettles, and coats of exceptional quality.
Our final stop before lunch is the historic Valcheta Train Station, inaugurated by President Figueroa Alcorta in 1910. The functioning telegraphs, old magneto telephones, and salamander transport us back in time. The well-preserved state of the station, its furnishings, and ambiance reflect the locals' deep respect for their heritage and history.
To conclude our journey through time, we indulge in a gourmet culinary experience. We head south from Valcheta on a gravel road to Chipauquil, a small rural area at the northern entrance of the remarkable Somuncurá Plateau ( El Fuerte Argentino ). Behind a wind-breaking fruit grove lies La Estancia Sensoriel, a lush oasis traversed by the Valcheta stream. Our French hosts welcome us to enjoy a gourmet meal blending traditional Avignon recipes with Patagonian flavors, accompanied by engaging conversations and excellent wines. After lunch, if you wish, you can refresh yourself in the stream's waters.
At around 5:00 p.m., we return to The Caves, retracing our route. The service concludes with a drop-off at the meeting point.
