Tour Description
Our adventure begins at 8:00 am at the designated meeting point. We will depart from Las Grutas, heading south along National Route No. 3.
As we travel, we'll delve into the history and highlights of this Patagonian region. After covering 140 km, we’ll reach Sierra Grande, known for housing Argentina's largest iron mine. This town was a ghost town following the mine’s closure in 1994 until it reopened two decades later.
Continuing another fifty kilometers south, we cross into Chubut province and, an hour later, arrive at Peninsula Valdés, a UNESCO Natural Heritage of Humanity site.
Our first stop in the Peninsula is the Itsmo Ameghino Interpretation Center. Here, six rooms await us, offering insights into the region's native cultures, the diverse fauna and flora of the Patagonian steppe and coastline, and marine life in the Argentine sea. A massive Southern Right Whale skeleton introduces us to upcoming whale watching, and from the center's panoramic viewpoint, we can admire the Golfo Nuevo, Golfo San José, and Isla Pájaros.
We proceed on our journey, stopping just before reaching the vibrant town of Punta Pirámides. Here, we visit a sea lion colony where many gather between November and January to birth their young. This spot offers stunning views, teeming with seagulls, cormorants, dolphins, whales, and sometimes orcas, all set against deep blue waters, cliffs, and a refreshing breeze.
In Puerto Pirámides, we embark on a nearly two-hour excursion to observe the Southern Right Whales. Around 1,500 whales gather yearly in this area to mate, providing a spectacular display of jumps and graceful movements witnessed up close.
Post-sighting, depending on weather and timing, we may dine by the sea at a historic port pub, or head directly north on Peninsula Valdés to Estancia San Lorenzo. Here, we'll enjoy lunch and uncover the secrets of life on a Patagonian ranch and the art of shearing.
Following lunch, we head to the coast in an old military truck to experience another of the area's breathtaking landscapes, La Pingüinera. This coastal haven is home to Magellanic Penguins nesting in spring. We can closely observe these penguins while respecting and preserving their habitat.
We conclude our day by learning more about the local history and wildlife before returning to Las Grutas via the same route. The tour wraps up with a drop-off at the meeting point around 7 pm.
