This journey offers a truly unique adventure as we embark on a path that showcases one of humanity's most incredible feats. We will traverse the Andes Mountains at the exact location where San Martín and O'Higgins journeyed in 1817.

Over the course of 7 days and 6 nights, we will navigate through stunning landscapes, nestled between the towering peaks of Aconcagua and Mercedario, the highest mountains in the Americas. Along the way, we will encounter vast herds of guanacos and witness the majestic flight of condors. As night falls, the southern hemisphere sky will dazzle us with its breathtaking array of stars. The serene atmosphere, campfires, guitar melodies, and shared moments over mate create the perfect setting to reflect on each day's experiences.

This excursion is perfect for nature enthusiasts and horseback riding aficionados eager to relive the crossing as experienced by the Army of the Andes.

Tour Description

Day 1

Our meeting point is in Los Molles at 6 p.m. for the Entry.

Here, the guides who will accompany you throughout this adventure will provide a comprehensive briefing about the route. Following this, we'll conduct the " Customs"—selecting all essential items needed for our journey to be carried in the two saddlebags. Any remaining personal belongings and luggage will be securely stored at the Hostel.

This initial day is intentionally relaxed, designed to help you become acquainted with your fellow riders and guides. It's also crucial to acclimatize to the altitude. We'll spend our first night at the Hostel, enjoying a delightful dinner together.

Day 2

At the break of dawn, after a hearty breakfast, we depart by van to Las Leñas Chicas, where we meet our travel partners: the horses.

With guidance from our experienced guides and baqueanos, each rider is carefully matched with the most suitable horse.

We set off on our ride, reaching Portezuelo Ancho for a cold lunch before continuing to our camp in Valle Hermoso.

Our first night of camping involves preparing our "beds" with tarps, sleeping bags, and blankets. Meanwhile, the guide assistant will kindle the fire for cooking, allowing us to enjoy a night under the stars, accompanied by a stove, a guitar, and the tranquil silence of the Andes.

Day 3

Post-breakfast, we ready our horses for a westward journey towards Trujillo Stream, where we'll have a cold lunch. After a restful pause, we continue our ride to Piedras Negras, our summer post. This will be our third night of camping, with morning rides of approximately 3 hours and afternoon rides of about 2 hours.

Day 4

On the fourth day, after breakfast, we prepare the mules and saddlebags as we ascend to the border with Chile (Santa Elena pass, 3080 meters).

After returning to camp post-lunch, we will be treated to delicious fried cakes as a snack. Our fourth night will be spent dining under the expansive sky. The total riding time for the day will be around 7 hours.

Day 5

Following breakfast, we head to the Yesera Post at the Gr Turismo Aventura Base Camp. After lunch, we cross the Cobre River.

For our final night, after dinner, we will enjoy a trick tournament.

Day 6

After breakfast, we complete the final saddling of our horses and mules.

Our journey concludes as we head back to Portezuelo Ancho, where a tasty lunch with fresh beer awaits, followed by transportation back to the Pehuenche Refuge in Los Molles. Expect to arrive between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. After some free time in the afternoon, we'll gather for dinner and a farewell.

Day 7

We bid farewell with a hearty and abundant breakfast.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Crossing of the Andes horseback riding tour typically lasts between 4 and 7 days, depending on the chosen itinerary and the logistics of the excursion. Each day includes 4 to 7 hours of riding through foothill valleys, high mountain passes, and river crossings in the Andes Mountains, connecting Argentina and Chile (or vice versa). The tour ascends to altitudes above 3,000 meters above sea level, making it moderately to highly challenging: it requires good physical condition, acclimatization to the altitude, and a spirit of adventure. Overnight stays are in mountain camps or outposts, with expert guides, muleteers, and Criollo horses trained for the terrain.

The price of the adventure tour generally includes saddled horse and pack mules, bilingual guide and muleteers, camping equipment (tents, dishes, sleeping mats), camp accommodations, all meals en route, treated water, first-aid kit and safety equipment, as well as local transfers related to the itinerary. Flights, hotel nights before or after the tour, alcoholic beverages, personal equipment (sleeping bag, technical clothing), tips, border fees/visas, and travel insurance are typically not included. Tour rates vary depending on the season, group size, and private services. A deposit is usually required to book; please inquire about cancellation policies and guaranteed dates.

The best time for the Andes Crossing horseback trek is during the Southern Hemisphere summer (December to March), when the mountain passes are more passable. Late spring and early autumn may be possible, but with colder temperatures and a higher probability of instability. The Andean climate is changeable: sunny days with high UV radiation, strong winds, a significant temperature range, and cold nights that can reach 0°C or below at higher altitudes. Snowfall or brief storms are also possible. The guides monitor the forecast and adjust the itinerary for safety. During peak season, it is advisable to book 60–90 days in advance, as tour spaces are limited.

For this adventure tourism experience, pack a layering system: thermal base layer, fleece or softshell jacket, and waterproof/windproof jacket. Bring riding or trekking pants, gaiters/chaps, mid-calf boots (or hiking boots), and lightweight camping shoes. Also pack a hat, buff, gloves, category 3/4 UV sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen, lip balm, and insect repellent. A 1–2 L water bottle or hydration pack is recommended. Bring a -5 to -10°C sleeping bag and sleeping pad. A headlamp and power bank are also essential. Pack a quick-drying towel, dry bag, and a basic toiletry kit. Bring your travel documents, insurance, cash, and energy snacks. The operator sets a maximum weight per pack (approximately 10–12 kg) to optimize logistics and safety.

Experience as an expert rider is not required, but basic riding experience and good physical condition are recommended. Riding and safety instructions are provided before departure; helmet use is mandatory. There is usually a minimum age (12–14 years old), and a medical certificate is required for pre-existing conditions; this activity is not recommended for pregnant women. Travel insurance covering equestrian activities, high-altitude mountaineering, and evacuation is essential. A valid passport or other valid identification is required when crossing the Argentina–Chile border, and depending on nationality, a valid visa is also required; minors need authorization. Guides carry a first-aid kit, communication equipment, and implement risk management protocols throughout the trip.
