The walking tour kicks off at our office nestled in the San Telmo neighborhood. As one of the most historic areas in Buenos Aires, San Telmo is renowned for its lively tango and arts scene. The neighborhood's antique markets, distinctive street lighting (affectionately known as "lanterns"), cobblestones, ancient architecture, and original decorations contribute to its unique bohemian vibe. Sundays are particularly bustling as the street market springs to life around Plaza Dorrego.
As the tour commences, we will venture into the San Telmo market, a structure inaugurated in 1897 to cater to the influx of immigrants during that era. Today, you'll still find some stalls offering meat, vegetables, and other groceries, though the majority now feature local cuisine and international specialties. Here, we'll indulge in some delectable empanadas.
Our journey continues along Defensa Street, in the heart of the San Telmo district, until we reach Plaza Dorrego. After exploring the various craft stalls, we'll board a bus to La Boca, famed for the Boca Juniors stadium and the vibrant Caminito street. We'll be captivated by the street tango performances and learn how tango, soccer, and diverse immigrant influences have shaped Buenos Aires into one of the world's most captivating cities. Here, we'll pause to enjoy a coffee and a snack.
We will then ride another bus to admire the views of the modern skyscrapers in Puerto Madero before arriving at Plaza de Mayo, the central square of Buenos Aires and the political hub of Argentina. We'll visit the Metropolitan Cathedral and observe the Cabildo, the colonial City Hall, and the Casa Rosada, the presidential office.
After exploring the square, we'll proceed to the Obelisk, a symbol of Buenos Aires, experiencing the daily life of an Argentine local as we stroll along the bustling Avenida 9 de Julio, the widest avenue in the world. Historical buildings, monuments, and streets will showcase the city's evolution since its founding.
We will take the subway to the Recoleta neighborhood, where we'll encounter stunning architecture, numerous museums, elegant cafes, restaurants, exclusive avenues, and shopping centers.
Our tour will include the impressive Recoleta Cemetery, the final resting place for many of the nation's aristocratic families and historical figures, including Eva Duarte Perón. Here, the tour will conclude, allowing you the rest of the afternoon to wander and explore independently.
